(July 17, 2022 – York, Pa.): Three of the most impactful hitters in York Revolution history provided huge hits on Sunday as Telvin Nash homered in his first at-bat back, Nellie Rodriguez slammed a game-tying shot in the eighth, and Melky Mesa provided a walk-off single in the ninth as the Revs came from behind to beat the Staten Island FerryHawks, 6-5 at PeoplesBank Park. The Revs avoid a sweep in the process and claim their third walk-off win of the season and the 80th in stadium history.
The third walk-off hit of Mesa’s Revs career completed a comeback from down 5-1 as the Revs scored the final five runs of the day.
York turned to Duke von Schamann in another spot start while Staten Island countered with Francisco Carrillo who was making just his second appearance with the FerryHawks and first career start outside of winter ball.
The scoring opened in the second as in his first at-bat with York since 2019, Nash looked like he never left, driving the second pitch he saw over the playground in left center to put York up early, 1-0. For Nash, it was the 95th jack of his York career, further cushioning his all-time franchise lead.
Staten Island answered back in a big way in the third. After Alfredo Reyes led off the inning with a single and made his way to third on an errant pickoff attempt, he scored one batter later via an RBI groundout from leadoff man Antoine Duplantis. The next batter, Rusney Castillo was hit by a pitch and was followed by Angel Aguilar who launched his 11th homer of the season, a two-run blast to left center to extend the lead to 3-1.
The FerryHawks added two more in the fourth inning. After three straight singles to lead off the inning, they followed with two productive outs as Reyes hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Dupalntis followed with another RBI groundout to pad the lead up to 5-1.
York spent the next three innings trying to chip away at the deficit.
In the fourth inning, Connor Lien singled off the Arch Nemesis to score Carlos Franco who had walked, cutting it to 5-2.
After getting two in scoring position with one out in the fifth, Mesa legged out a slow infield single to score Lenin Rodriguez and chase Carrillo after just 4.1 innings.
In the sixth, it was Nash who continued his hot return, lining a base hit up the middle to score Franco. With runs in three straight innings, York cut the deficit down to 5-4.
Nick Howard and Roniel Raudes kept the offense in the game with three hitless innings, two from Howard and one from Raudes. Howard also added two strike outs in his outing.
Leading off the 8th inning, York got a big swing from Nellie Rodriguez who blasted a no-doubter over the Nemesis to tie the game at 5-5. It was Rodriguez’s 11th homer of the year and his first since July 2nd at Long Island. After a Franco single, reliever Eddy Reynoso was able to settle down, setting down the next three hitters to keep the game tied heading into the ninth.
Jim Fuller (3-4) entered in a tie ballgame, going 1-2-3 against the bottom of the order, including a strikeout. York pitching did not allow a hit from the fourth inning on, retiring 18 of the final 19 in the process.
Lenin Rodriguez led off the bottom of the ninth with a slow roller to shortstop, but Alfredo Reyes spiked the throw, allowing Rodriguez to advance to second. Yefri Perez relieved him as a pinch runner, representing the winning run. Despite attempting a sacrifice bunt, Troy Stokes Jr. worked a walk, putting two on with nobody out. Elmer Reyes tried a bunt of his own but was unsuccessful, popping up to first base. It was Mesa playing the hero on this day, however, depositing a single into center field, scoring Perez to give York the 6-5 win. It was the third walk-off hit of Mesa’s Revs career, and his first since September 2019.
