(June 9, 2022 – Central Islip, NY): The York Revolution dropped the rubber match of their series to the Long Island Ducks, 6-5 on a one-out walk-off single by Deven Marrero in the bottom of the ninth inning at Fairfield Properties Ballpark on Thursday evening. All three games of the series were decided by 6-5 finals on last at-bat ninth inning decisions, with Long Island taking the latter two.
York jumped on top with two runs in the first inning as Carlos Franco drove a sac fly to deep left and Josue Herrera ripped an RBI single into right. The Revs made a bid at another run on Jack Kenley’s single to right, but Nellie Rodriguez was thrown out attempting to score by right fielder Johnni Turbo to end the inning.
The Ducks answered right back in their half, scoring four runs before an out was recorded to take the lead. Turbo and Vladimir Frias worked walks to start the inning before Alejandro De Aza singled to left. That loaded the bases for Sam Travis who launched a grand slam to left-center, his second of the year, both coming at the Revs’ expense as the Ducks took a 4-2 lead.
Yefri Perez connected on a solo homer to right-center for the Revs in the top of the second, just the 14th of his career but second in his last six games.
York scored two runs in the fourth to go back on top. Herrera led off by smacking a single off the right field fence and Kenley dropped down a perfect bunt single on which Ducks righty Joe Iorio threw errantly to first allowing Herrera to take third. Connor Lien drilled a two-run double to the alley in left-center, propelling York back ahead at 5-4.
The Ducks answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth when Marrero reached on a two-out single and stole second, prompting a throwing error from catcher Lenin Rodriguez, and a second throwing error by Perez in center allowing Marrero to score, tying the game at 5-5.
Neither team scored again until the bottom of the ninth when Austin Rei drew a leadoff walk and was bunted over by Rob Weissheier. That set the table for Marrero who ripped the game-winning single into center, driving in Rei with the deciding run.
Revs starter Austin Nicely rebounded well after his first four batters scored. The lefty worked seven innings for the fifth time in his last six starts, and allowed just an unearned run after the first. He finished by retiring his final six batters faced.
Kenley and Herrera led the offense with three-hit performances. Kenley posted his second consecutive three-hit game and is now 8-for-12 to begin the road trip.
