REVS CLOBBER HAWKS

(May 26, 2022 – Staten Island, NY):  The York Revolution enjoyed a laugher on Thursday night, blasting the Staten Island FerryHawks in a 17-1 victory at Staten Island University Hospital Northwell Health Community Park.  The Revs notched a series win with the victory, their third in the last four tries.

York used a 10-run third inning to stake claim to the lopsided contest, using five hits while taking advantage of two Staten Island errors and five walks.  It was tied for the third largest inning in franchise history, just two runs shy of the club record.

Edwin Figuera set the wheels in motion with a leadoff single to center on a two-strike pitch from FerryHawks righty Nick Carrell.  After moving to second on a wild pitch, Figuera scored on a single to right-center by Troy Stokes Jr. for the game’s first run.  JC Encarnacion followed with a double down the left field line, and two scored when Melky Mesa ripped a grounder past third baseman Angel Aguilar, ruled an error even though Aguilar was playing in and was unable to reach the ball on a backhand effort.  Carlos Franco added an RBI single to right, and the Revs scored additional runs on bases loaded walks to Lenin Rodriguez, Figuera, and Encarnacion.  The final two runs came across when Nellie Rodriguez smacked a one-hopper at shortstop Alfredo Reyes who was unable to handle it, resulting in an error.

York added three more runs in the fourth on a Figuera sac fly to center, an Encarnacion RBI single to right, and a Mesa RBI double off the left field wall as the lead grew to 13-0.

Revs starter Merandy Gonzalez (1-2) was outstanding, earning the win in his third start.  The righty retired 12 of the first 13 batters faced, keeping the FerryHawks without a hit through the first four innings.

Staten Island loaded the bases on three singles in the bottom of the fifth, but Gonzalez yielded only one run, scoring on a double play grounder.  He allowed just one run on four total hits in seven innings, walking one while striking out six.

Robinson Parra and Duke von Schamann each followed with scoreless innings in relief to close it out.

The offense enjoyed one last hurrah in the top of the ninth, scoring four times against reliever Kelsie Whitmore.  Encarnacion (4-for-5) led off with a double down the left field line, and Mesa launched a two-run homer that clanged off the top of the fence in right-center, his fourth of the year, capping a four RBI performance.  Connor Lien later belted a two-run homer of his own on a shot to left field, closing out the scoring.

The run total was the second-largest of the season for the Revs who tallied 13 hits and a season-high 11 walks.

York righty Jorge Martinez gets the ball on Friday night against Brent Teller when the Revs kick off a four-game Memorial Day weekend series in Lancaster at 6:30 p.m.  Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and the WOYK YouTube channel beginning at 6:10 p.m. with Darrell Henry and Jake Ness on the call.
