HERRERA WALKS IT OFF

(May 4, 2022 - York, Pa.):  Wednesday night’s game was quite the roller coaster, but the York Revolution finally snapped their four-game losing streak. It took extra innings, but Josue Herrera’s leadoff single in the 10th pushed across the winning run, giving York its third win of the year, 5-4 over the Gastonia Honey Hunters at PeoplesBank Park. The victory also snapped Gastonia's 10-game winning streak.

Gastonia struck first with a run in the top of the first, as a leadoff single by Johnny Davis eventually scored on a slow roller in the infield off the bat of Luis Roman for a run-scoring fielder's choice.

From there, starters Alex Sanabia and Deck McGuire traded zeroes until the sixth inning, when Sanabia retired the first two of the inning and got ahead 0-2 against sixth hole hitter Reece Hampton. Hampton hit a high pop up, which Sanabia appeared to be unable to see. Elmer Reyes ran across the mound from shortstop, but the ball dropped in the infield, and with the hangtime, Hampton reached second base for a double. The next hitter, Jake Skole, roped a long home run over the centerfield fence to extend the Gastonia lead to 3-0. Two batters later, Sanabia struck out Alex Holderbach, ending the inning and his evening.

On 104 pitches, Sanabia completed six innings allowing three runs, walking four and striking out five in a strong effort resulting in a no-decision.

In the bottom half, the Revs chased McGuire, loading the bases with one out following a Nellie Rodriguez single, an error, and a Herrera walk. Against reliever Quintin Torres-Costa, Reyes gave the Revs the clutch hit they had been looking for, lining a two-out single into center, scoring two and cutting the deficit to 3-2.

A leadoff walk and an errant pickoff throw by reliever Eduardo Rivera put a runner in scoring position with nobody away in the seventh, and Joseph Rosa drove in the insurance run with a one-out double to right field, making it 4-2 Honey Hunters.

In the bottom half of the seventh, the Revs knocked five straight hits, highlighted by RBI singles from Rodriguez and Herrera, knotting the game at 4-4.

The star of the top of the eighth inning was catcher Paul Mondesi, who threw out two runners trying to steal after both had reached on walks. Adrian Almeida benefited in the scoreless eighth, and Jim Fuller worked a scoreless ninth taking the Revs to their second extra-inning game of the young season.

Alberto Rodriguez began the top of the tenth on the mound with Zach Jarrett on second. A leadoff groundout moved Jarrett to third, before Rodriguez struck out the next two hitters to escape the inning unscathed.

Herrera led off the bottom of the tenth, and on a 1-2 pitch, smacked a single into the right-center gap, scoring pinch-runner Edwin Figuera who started as the ghost runner, and the Revs finally snapped their four-game losing skid on the second walk-off hit of Herrera's Revs career.

The two teams will play a rubber match bright and early on Thursday morning at 11 a.m. as lefties Austin Nicely and Jerry Keel will face off on the mound with York seeking its first series win of the year. It is Baseball in Education Day and a Throwback Thursday (Prehistoric Times). Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Shipley Energy Ticket Office.
