BLUEFISH COME BACK LATE

(June 26, 2017 – Bridgeport, Ct.):  Jay Gause took a no-hitter into the fifth inning in his first start with the York Revolution, but the Bridgeport Bluefish went in front in the seventh, handing the Revs a 3-2 loss on Monday evening at Harbor Yard.

Gause faced the minimum through the first four innings, erasing a one-out walk to Jose Gil in the second on a double play off the bat of Andrew Lambo.  The right-hander gave up just one run on two hits in five innings, walking one and striking out five.

The Revs built a 2-0 lead for Gause, scoring runs in the first and fifth innings.

Travis Witherspoon led off the game with a double to right and scored on an Isaias Tejeda single to left in the top of the first for the game’s first run.  Both batters extended hitting streaks to seven consecutive games.

The Revs had a runner at second with no outs in both the third and fourth innings but were unable to cash in.  In the fifth, York did extend the lead as Carlos Triunfel (3-for-3) smacked a one-out double to left, moved to third on an infield hit by Witherspoon (3-for-4), and scored on a sac fly to left by Alonzo Harris to go up 2-0.

Daniel Fields blooped a single to right for Bridgeport’s first hit, leading off the bottom of the fifth.  After moving to second on a balk, Fields scored on an RBI single up the middle by Gil to cut York’s lead to 2-1.  Gause came back to strike out Lambo and retire Jonathan Galvez on a double play to finish his night.

Luke Westphal stranded two in scoring position in the sixth inning, but the Bluefish got to fellow lefty Chase Huchingson in the seventh.  After striking out Fields looking for the first out, Huchingson lost Gil to a walk and Lambo followed with a single to left.  Gil slid into left fielder Dayron Varona’s throw to third base, advancing safely and allowing Lambo to move up to second.  It proved big, as Galvez lined a two-run double to left, giving Bridgeport a 3-2 lead.

Bluefish starter Rainy Lara (6-3) finished strong, retiring seven of his last eight batters to go seven innings and earn the win.  He scattered eight hits, allowing two runs on one walk and six strikeouts.

Bridgeport’s bullpen worked a pair of perfect innings to finish it as Drake Britton handled the eighth and Zac Grotz picked up his second save in the ninth.

Michael Click stranded two in scoring position in a scoreless eighth to finish the game on the mound for the Revs.

Notes: The Revs fall to 9-17 in one-run games; York had just 17 one-run losses all of last season.  Huchingson (2-3) allowed an earned run for just the third time in 24 outings all season and was charged with multiple earned runs for just the second time; he had allowed just two hits in six scoreless innings over his previous six appearances.  York’s offense was held in check after batting .372 and scoring 7.6 runs per game over the previous seven contests.  The Revs held an opponent without a home run for the first time in nine games.  With three hits, Witherspoon has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games with nine multi-hit games on that stretch.  Harris’ RBI was his eighth in the last seven games.  York lefty Frank Gailey (5-5, 5.13) will face Bluefish right-hander Cory Riordan (4-3, 3.75) on Tuesday night at 7:12 p.m.  Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK app beginning at 6:50 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
