(July 10, 2021 – York, Pa.): The York Revolution erased a pair of deficits and used a three-run sixth inning to down the Long Island Ducks, 8-7 in an exciting back-and-forth battle on Saturday night at PeoplesBank Park. The much-needed victory halts a three-game skid and sets up a chance for a series win on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Long Island jumped on a Revs error to lead off the game in the top of the first as Vladimir Frias reached on a throwing error and scored on an RBI fielder’s choice from L.J. Mazzilli for an early 1-0 lead.
York got even with a run in their second inning at the plate. With two outs on the board, Lenin Rodriguez belted an opposite field double to right-center and reached third on a passed ball. Darian Sandford drove Rodriguez home with a base hit to right for the 1-1 tie.
The Revs took their first lead of the night an inning later. Jack Kenley earned his fifth double of the year on a line drive off the right field fence. Four consecutive base hits followed as JC Encarnacion collected an infield hit and Josue Herrera plated Kenley on a base hit to right. Joining in on the hit party, Andrew Dundon sent Encarnacion home on a line drive to left and Rodriguez capped off the inning with a two-run knock to left. On five consecutive hits, York took a 5-1 lead.
Just a half inning later, Long Island took back a one run lead, 6-5, scoring five times on four hits in the fourth. Loading the bases with no one out, Breland Almadova drove in the first run on a line drive single to center. Frias provided the big hit, a bases-clearing double to left for two more runs. Back-to-back sac flies followed from Steve Lombardozzi and Mazzilli.
York took back the lead, 8-6, with three runs in the sixth. Kenley and Encarnacion worked back-to-back walks and Herrera drove in his second run with a double off the Arch Nemesis in left. For his first multi-RBI game since driving in six on June 3rd at Gastonia, Dundon cleared the bases for two more runs on another knock to left field.
Keeping it close, Long Island came within one in the seventh. After Lew Ford ran out an infield hit after beating a throw from Revs reliever Isaac Sanchez, Ryan Jackson doubled off the Nemesis. With two in scoring position, Sal Giardina drove in his fifteenth of the year on a sac fly to right to cut York’s lead to one, 8-7. Sanchez rebounded to strike out Johnni Turbo, keeping the lead intact.
Victor Capellan fired a dominant eighth with a pair of strike outs, and Jim Fuller pulled back into a tie for the league lead with his ninth save in a scoreless ninth, working around a one-out single to close it out.
The Revs conclude the series on Sunday with Austin Steinfort (1-3) making his eighth start of the season. Long Island will send Anderson DeLeon (0-0) to the mound. It is Slushie Day presented by PA Virtual Charter School as the first 300 children get a free ice pop. Every Sunday is Sunday Family Fun Day presented by Weis Markets: play catch on the field before the game (1-1:30pm), pre-game autograph session, and kids run the bases after the game. It’s also Bark in the Park as well-mannered dogs can join their owners at the ballpark. This weekend’s Homestand Sponsor is Children's Aid Society. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Shipley Energy Ticket Office.
Notes: Sandford stole second base in the bottom of the first inning for his league-leading 30th steal of the season; it was the 231st of his Atlantic League career, tying Rolando Avila for second on the league’s all-time list.
