GARY, Ind. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats announced the signing of pitcher Brandon Guske on Sunday afternoon and have moved outfielder Cameron Newell from the disabled list to the inactive list. The RailCats also placed right-handed pitcher Drasen Johnson on the disabled list with a back injury retroactive to Saturday, June 10.

Guske went 6-8 with a 3.96 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) as a senior at Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University and was named a Pre-Season All-American. Guske finished with a team-high eight complete games, 102.1 innings and 86 strikeouts as a senior. Guske was a two-time American Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-Conference selection. As a freshman in 2014, Guske was named the AMC Freshman Pitcher of the Year.

Before being placed on the disabled list, Johnson was 2-2 with a 0.69 ERA, two saves and two holds in a team-high 10 relief appearances. In 13 innings, Johnson has allowed just one earned run and hasn’t walked a single hitter.

Prior to being placed on the inactive list, Newell was on the disabled list with an inner ear infection. In two starts, Newell was hitless for the RailCats. Newell was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 35th round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of the University of California at Santa Barbara. Newell signed with Gary in 2016, hitting .303 with 14 extra-base hits, 24 RBIs and four stolen bases in 61 games.

The RailCats conclude their seven-game homestand vs. the Explorers on Sunday afternoon at 2:10 p.m. Southpaw Braulio Torres-Perez (2-0, 4.42) counters against Sioux City left-hander Kramer Sneed (0-1, 7.36) in his second start of the season vs. Gary in the series finale.

Sunday’s game features a Pre-Game Catch on the Field and the return of the NorthShore Health Fair. Bring a ball and glove for your chance to play catch on the field before the game and visit the NorthShore tables around the stadium with information, health testing and more.
