Redhawks Stage Comeback to Beat ‘Cats Late

FARGO, ND- In game one of a three-game set at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, North Dakota, the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks (28-23) completed a five-run comeback against the Gary SouthShore RailCats (22-28) to win 7-6 and take the lead in the second meeting between these two teams this year.

With nobody out and runners at the corners in the bottom of the seventh, John Silviano ripped a sharp ground ball to Jose Mercado at second base. Mercado quickly made the back-handed stab to start the 4-6-3 double play. 

From third base, Kevin Krause hesitated and then made a break for the plate. As the RailCats turned two, first baseman Daniel Lingua spun and threw home in hopes of completing the triple play, but Krause slid in before the tag and scored the ‘Hawks seventh run of the game to take the late-inning lead.

In relief, Nick Garcia suffered the loss for the RailCats after 2.2 innings on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits with a strikeout. Mark Finkelnburg earned the win as he faced three and retired two.

Leadoff hitter Zach Welz smoked a screamer down the third base line to open the game, and Daniel Lingua would plate Welz later in the frame to take a 1-0 RailCats lead. 

In the fifth, Gary SouthShore would add four more to crack open a 5-0 score capped off by a Lingua single for his second RBI of the day headed to the bottom of the frame. 

Following his fifth inning single, Lingua extended his on-base streak to 27 games, the third longest active streak in the American Association, and the fourth longest on-base streak this season.

RailCats’ starter Jack Alkire was masterful through four no-hit innings, but with a 5-0 lead in the fifth, Alkire allowed two runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning and would ultimately finish his day after 5.1 innings on the mound with seven hits, five runs, four of which were earned, two walks and six strikeouts. 

The Redhawks would score three more in the sixth to tie things up at five-a-piece, and while the RailCats retook the lead with one run in the ensuing half inning, Fargo-Moorhead took the final advantage in the bottom of the seventh and closed things out from there. 

The save went to Alex Dubord who faced three and retired three.

Game two between the Gary SouthShore RailCats and the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks is scheduled for tomorrow, July 14 at 7:02 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND.
