Goldeyes' Bats Explode in Sixth, Finish Things Off to Take Series
GARY, Ind.- In game two, the Gary SouthShore RailCats (18-24) were overcome by the Winnipeg Goldeyes (18-22) in a 10-7 final as the Goldeyes took the series with the win at the Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana.
Despite a 4-for-5 day at the dish for Daniel “DaVinci” Lingua, third four-hit effort of the season, the Goldeyes powered back from down four to win the ball game late.
The RailCats opened up a 5-1 lead after five, but the Goldeyes exploded for seven unanswered runs to take the 8-5 lead heading into the eighth.
Down by four, Kyle Martin blasted a two-run shot to cut the deficit to two, and then Raul Navarro played the sequel in back-to-back bombs to make it 5-4. With two outs, the Goldeyes added one more and knotted things up at five-a-piece.
Winnipeg dropped a three-piece in the next frame to take a three-run lead before the RailCats cut things to one in the bottom of the eighth.
To shut the door, Logan Hill roped a double on the first pitch he saw in the top of the ninth, advanced to third on a throwing error, and came around to score on a Wes Darvall single on the second pitch of the inning. One more run would plate in the ninth to make it 10-7 Goldeyes.
Both starters earned no decisions as RaIlCats’ Cas Silber threw 5.2 innings with nine hits, five runs and seven strikeouts while Goldeyes’ starter Pete Perez went five innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. Through five, Silber had conceded one run on five hits.
The loss went to Jordan Nelson in his professional debut after Nelson had 2.1 innings of three-run baseball, two of which were earned, on four hits and four walks.
Ken Frosch put the win in Winnipeg with one scoreless inning in the sixth. Jose Jose came in for the five-out save and closed things out for his second save in as many nights.
Game three between the Gary SouthShore RailCats and the Winnipeg Goldeyes is scheduled for tomorrow, July 4 at 6:10 p.m. at the Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana.
