T-BONES POWER PAST RAILCATS IN SERIES OPENER

Three hits from Ryan Fitzgerald wasn’t enough for Gary (6-5) on Memorial Day as the RailCats fell to the Kansas City T-Bones (4-6), 10-4, in the series opener on Mondayin front 3.429 fans at U.S. Steel Yard. Gary fell behind 1-0 in the second and could never tie or take the lead after.

Tyler Harris (0-1, 3.60 ERA) made his second start on the season for the RailCats. Harris gave up five runs (four earned), on six hits, walked one, and struck out three in four innings pitched.

The RailCats’ Anthony Cheky had two RBIs for the RailCats in a losing effort and Wilfredo Gimenez extended his personal-best hitting streak to six with a single to leadoff the bottom of the seventh.

Kansas City (4-6) struck first with an unearned run in the second. Former Washington National Zach Walters led off the inning with a single to right for the first hit of the game. Two batters later, Joe Jackson reached on a fielder’s choice, however a RailCats throwing error allowed Walters to advance all the up to third on the play. Patrick Brady then brought home Walters on a sacrifice fly to shallow left field for the first run of the afternoon.

The T-Bones extended their lead to 5-0 with four more runs in the third. Marcus Lemon doubled Kansas City’s lead to two with an RBI groundout before Walters made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to left. With one on and two out, Chase McDonald took Tyler Harris deep to left-center for the first home run of the year at the Steel Yard, putting KC in front by five.

The RailCats got on the scoreboard in inning number five when Cheky brought in Ryan Fitzgerald via a sacrifice fly. Fitzgerald reached base with his second hit of the afternoon. He advanced to second on John Holland’s walk and then to third on a Kris Goodman sacrifice bunt.

Kansas City added on to their lead in the seventh when Kevin Keyes hit his third home run of the season off the scoreboard in left field.

Gary cut into its deficit in the seventh inning as RailCats scored twice in the seventh. Kris Goodman walked in Wilfredo Gimenez with no one out in the seventh. The team scored a second run in the inning when Cheky grounded into a double play to score Ryan Fitzgerald.

The T-Bones tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth to re-take a six-run lead. Garcia brought home Patrick Brady on an RBI single with the bases loaded in the eighth before Lemmon followed Christian Correa with a sacrifice fly to make the score 9-3.

The RailCats added their fourth run of the game in the bottom of the eighth when Alex Crosby hit an RBI single scoring Colin Willis. Kansas City added the final run of the ballgame in the top of the ninth inning when Jackson drove in McDonald with an RBI double to make the score 10-4.

Former Chicago White Sox starter Scott Carroll pitched six solid innings to pick up his first win on the season (1-1, 2.46 ERA). Carroll only surrendered one earned run on four hits, struck out two, and walked one.

Gary continues their seven-game homestand and four-game series vs. Kansas City on Tuesday night at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday’s pitching matchup features southpaw Jeff McKenzie (0-1, 2.77) against Kansas City right-hander Calvin Drummond (0-0, 3.72).
