GARY, IND. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats were swept by the Chicago Dogs in their two-game set on Sandlot Night at U.S. Steel Yard on Saturday evening after losing 8-6 in the resumption of the June 6th suspended game before getting shutout 2-0 in game two. Following Saturday’s losses, the ‘Cats are now 3-7 10 games into their 10-day, 11-game homestand and a season-worst 12 games below .500. 4

Gary (24-36) took the opening lead fwith a four-run first inning back on June 6th. Evan Marzilli doubled down the right field line for the first hit of the game before moving up to third on a sacrifice bunt from Marcus Mooney. Randy Santiesteban followed Mooney with an RBI single through the left side of the single, bringing home Marzilli from third for the first run. Colin Willis then doubled the RailCats lead with an RBI double to right, bringing Santiesteban around to score from first. Tom Walraven made it 4-0 with a two-run home run just inside the left field foul pole.

Chicago (36-23) trimmed the Gary lead to 4-3 with a three-run second. Keon Barnum got the Dogs on the board with a solo home run to begin the inning. Tony Rosselli then walked before Victor Roache brought him home with an RBI double to left-center. Roache advanced to third on the throw home and scored the final run of the inning on an RBI groundout off the bat of Carlos Zambrano.

The Dogs took their first lead with the three runs in the resumption of the suspended game on a three-run home run from Jordan Dean in the fourth. David Olmedo-Barrera and Rey Gonzalez singled before Dean launched a three-run home run on to the left field concourse.

All-Star outfielder Victor Roache increased the Dogs’ lead to three with a two-out solo home run in the fifth. Roache’s homer was his 13th of the year and his first of the series.

The Dogs went up 8-4 with another run in the top of the sixth. Back-to-back singles from Harrison Smith and Gonzalez gave Chicago runners on the corners. Two batters later, Edwin Arroyo came through with an RBI single to center.

The ‘Cats scored for the first time in the resumption of the suspended with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth for the final runs of game one. Wilfredo Gimenez walked with one out before moving up to second on a wild pitch. Danny De La Calle then brought Gimenez around to score with an RBI double down the right field line before John Price Jr. scored De La Calle with an RBI triple.

Jumpei Akanuma (2-2) was tagged with the loss in his first appearance since coming off the 7-Day Disabled List on Thursday in game one. The rookie right-hander allowed five runs on seven hits over 2.1 innings.

Jake Dalhberg (5-3) recorded his second win in his second start against Gary. The southpaw went seven innings, allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out a season-high nine batters. Former MLB pitcher Casey Crosby recorded a hold with a hitless bottom of the eighth while Kyle Halbohn (9) retired all three batters he faced for the save in the bottom of the ninth.

Chicago scored the only runs in game two in the sixth. Rosselli singled to begin the inning before Olmedo-Barrera brought him around to score with an RBI double to the right-center gap. Arroyo then moved Olmedo-Barrera up to third with a sacrifice bunt before Barnum brought in the final run of the night with a two-out RBI single to center.

Trevor Lubking (5-6) was charged with his third straight loss despite allowing just two runs in a complete-game performance. The southpaw yielded just five hits, walked none and struck out five.

Wes Torrez (1-2) recorded his first career complete-game performance in game two. The right-hander allowed just one baserunner to reach third base, yielded four singles, retired the final 11 hitters he faced, walked none, and struck out six, including the last three batters.

Gary concludes their season-long 10-day, 11-game homestand on Sunday afternoon at 2:10 p.m. RailCats right-hander Justin Sinibaldi (3-4, 2.78) opposes former RailCat Austin Wright (4-5, 3.68) in the series finale.

Sunday’s game is another Times Family Sunday and Sunday FUNday. Sunday Funday includes $5 cocktails, pre-game catch on the field, presented by Beacon Hill Dental, and Kids Run the Bases. The Times Family Sunday special includes $15 tickets for two adults and up to four kids via the NWI Times paper or social media outlets.
