SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats were swept for the first time after losing their third straight game to the Sioux Falls Canaries, 6-3, on a windy Sunday afternoon in South Dakota. Sunday’s loss was Gary’s first loss in the last game of a series and are under .500 for the first time since Wednesday, May 29th.

Gary (10-11) took their first lead of the entire series with two runs in the top of the first. Alex Crosby drew a five-pitch walk to begin the game before coming around to score on the first of two RBI doubles from Randy Santiesteban. With Santiesteban on third and one out, Rolando Gomez brought home Santiesteban with a sacrifice fly to right-center.

Sioux Falls (13-9) tied the game at 2-2 with two runs in the bottom of the first. Kevin Taylor drew a two-out walk before Clint Coulter hit a two-run home run over the left-center wall.

The RailCats regained the lead with their final run of the afternoon in the third. Crosby singled with one out before Tom Walraven extended his season-high on-base streak to 14 games with a four-pitch walk. Santiesteban followed with his second of two RBI doubles down the left field line, plating Crosby from second.

The Canaries took their first lead of the day with two more two-out runs in fourth. Jordan Ebert reached on the first of two fielding errors in the inning by Gomez at second base before Mike Hart pulled a two-run homer over the right-center wall.

Sioux Falls increased their lead to 6-3 with two more runs in the fifth. Brett Vertigan led off the inning with a single before Mitch Glasser pulled a double down the third base line. Taylor followed Glasser with a soft two-run single down the left field line, scoring both Vertigan and Glasser.

Trevor Lubking (4-2) was charged with the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk over five innings. David Griffin threw two scoreless innings of relief in his first appearance of the series while Sandy Lugo struck out a pair in a scoreless top of the eighth.

Mark Seyler (1-1) recorded his first win with four innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen while Reilly Hovis (2) secured the win with his second save in the top of the ninth. The right-hander allowed a leadoff single to Raymond Jones before retiring the next three batters to end the game.
