GARY, IND. - The ‘Cats picked up their first win of the series in game three on Wednesday night in a tight low scoring duel, 2-1 the final. Gary (10-8) didn’t need much offense as Trevor Lubking (4-1) was dominant on the mound going seven innings, allowing one unearned run on 5 hits and striking out seven.

Lubking retired the first nine hitters he faced but Trevor Simms (1-2) was matching him batter for batter as he retired the first eight he saw. But Tom Walraven picked up a 2-out single in the third and the next two hitters in Evan Marzilli and Marcus Mooney were both hit by a pitch. With the bases-loaded and two down, Randy Santiesteban drew a walk, scoring Walraven from third.

Chicago (12-6) responded with their only run in the top of the fifth. Keon Barnum struck out to start the inning but reached first on a passed ball that got by Wilfredo Gimenez. Lubking would strike out the next two batters but then Rey Gonzalez crushed a ball off the top of the wall in left, scoring Barnum from first on a 2-out RBI-double.

However, in that same fifth inning Gary would score the game’s last run. Walraven picked up his second single of the game (at the time the teams second hit of the game) and got to second base on a wild pitch. Marzilli would follow with a walk and another wild pitch from Simms advanced both runners. Mooney lifted a sac fly to right fielder Tony Rosselli, giving the RailCats a 2-1 lead.

The Dogs would threaten in the seventh. Keon Barnum ripped a ground-rule double into the stands down the right field line to start the inning. After a Victor Roache single (advanced to second on the throw home from Collin Willis) there were two runners in scoring position with no outs. Lubking responded with a strikeout, pop out and groundout to get out of the inning with no damage done.

Felix Carvallo picked up his second hold with a scoreless three-up, three-down eight inning and Sandy Lugo picked up his second save with a scoreless ninth.

Lubking picked up his league-tying-high fourth win of the season and second win against the Dogs. Offensively, for the third straight game the ‘Cats finished with four hits, all singles, and Walraven extended his team-high hitting streak to 11 games.

Gary concludes their four-game homestand on Thursday night at 7:10 p.m. vs. Chicago. The Dogs send southpaw Jake Dahlberg (2-0, 2.00) to the hill while the RailCats have yet to announce their starter for the series finale.
