Game Highlights

ROSEMONT, Ill. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats were held to five hits and set a season-high by striking out 14 times in a 4-0 defeat to the Chicago Dogs. Chicago starter Tommy Thorpe struck out a career-high eight batters over a season-high 6.2 innings to earn the win.

Both pitchers settled in early. Thorpe allowed a leadoff single to Will Savage in the first, but he then retired the next eight Gary hitters. Gary starter Keaton Steele, meanwhile, allowed a first-inning single and a second-inning walk, but erased both runners with double plays.

Chicago (39-49) would have an opportunity to score in the fourth, as Edwin Arroyo singled with one out and advanced to third on Trey Vavra’s two-out single. However, Dalton Blaser would roll over a 3-1 fastball for a groundout to first, keeping the game scoreless.

Gary (50-38) would mount their own threat Wilfredo Gimenez drew a lead off walk, then advanced to second on a two-out hit from D.K. Carey. Will Savage, though, ended the threat by grounding out to Thorpe.

In the sixth, Chicago broke through as Joe Benson lined Steele’s first pitch of the inning into right-center for a leadoff triple. Two pitches later, Stephen Perez brought in Benson with a sacrifice fly to center.

In the seventh, Gary would mount a two-out rally. Andy De Jesus singled to right, then Garrett Copeland drew a four-pitch walk. Kaohi Downing would then replace Thorpe, striking out D.K. Carey with two men on to end the inning.

Thorpe (3-4) would work a season-best 6.2 shutout innings, striking out eight batters while walking two.

Steele (4-5), meanwhile, would also work into the seventh. Blaser led off with a double, followed by a walk to Benson. Steele, though, buckled down to retire the next three men to keep it a 1-0 deficit. He would complete a season-high 7.0 innings, allowing the one run on six hits, while walking two and striking out two.

In the eighth, things would come crashing down for the RailCats, as Robbie Coursel retired his first two hitters, but then allowed two infield singles, followed by a broken-bat RBI single from Blaser. Benson provided the knockout blow, pulling a ground ball down the left field line for a two-run double, extending the lead to 4-0.

Taylor Grover came out of the Chicago bullpen to strike out the side in the ninth inning to finish off the contest.
