Gary smashes Sioux Falls, 15-3, to even series

GARY, Ind. — Eight innings of three-run, four-hit ball from Alex Gunn, four hits from D.K. Carey and four RBIs apiece from Randy Santiesteban and Andy Paz led the Gary SouthShore RailCats to a 15-3 blowout win over the Sioux Falls Canaries on Tuesday night at U.S. Steel Yard with 3,915 in attendance. Gary has now won five of their last six contests and nine of their last 11 games in Tuesday’s win and had every starter reach base at least once in the middle game of the series.

Gunn (6-3) recorded his second consecutive win and matched a career-high with nine strikeouts in the middle game of the series. Gunn also took a no-hitter and a shutout into the fifth after retiring 15 of the first 17 hitters he faced.

Gary (33-27) took the opening lead for the seventh straight game with a three-run first inning. Carey recorded the first hit of the night with a single to right, extending his hitting streak to seven games. Santiesteban followed with an RBI double down the left field line, bringing Carey around to score all the way from first. Two batters later, Ronnie Mitchell pulled a grounder to David Bergin at first, however, the first baseman couldn’t make the play, allowing Santiesteban to score. Paz then delivered the final run of the inning with an RBI triple into the right field corner.

The RailCats increased their lead to 4-0 with another run in the second. Garrett Copeland led off the frame with an opposite-field single to left before Will Savage grounded out to Miles Nordgren on the mound, advancing Copeland to second. Alex Crosby followed with a six-pitch walk before Caret brought come Copeland with an RBI single to left.

Gary tacked on two more runs in the third to go up by six. Back-to-back doubles to start the inning from Mitchell and Paz gave the RailCats runners on the corners. Reggie Wilson made it 5-0 with an RBI groundout to the right side of the infield before Copeland recorded his second of three hits with an RBI single to right past a drawn in Canaries infield.

Sioux Falls (26-36) avoided being no-hit and shutout with their first hit and run in the top of the fifth. Jabari Henry reached second on the second catching error by Colin Willis in right field to begin the inning before reaching third on a wild pitch from Gunn before scoring on a passed ball from Paz. Two hitters later, Patrick Fiala ended Gunn’s no-hit bid with a two-out single to left, however, Gunn struck out Jeff Malm to end the inning.

Gary took their biggest lead of the series at 13-1 after scoring seven runs with 11 hitters coming to the plate in the bottom of the fifth. Crosby brought in the first run of the inning after being hit in the back with the bases loaded. Two batters later, Santiesteban drew a bases-loaded walk before Willis extended his season-high on-base streak to 15 games after plunked with the bases loaded. Mitchell followed with a bases-loaded walk before Paz recorded his third extra-base hit with a bases-clearing triple off the right-center wall on a hop.

Bergin cut the Gary lead to 13-3 with a two-run home run off the very top of the RailCats video board in left-center in the top of the sixth. Chris Grayson singled to right with two outs before Bergin launched his third home run of the series, also extending his season-high on-base streak to 21 games.

The RailCats quickly regained their 12-run lead with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Crosby reached on a fielder’s choice for the second out before Carey recorded the last of his four hits with a single to right, giving Gary runners on first and second. Santiesteban then pulled a two-run double down the left field line, plating both Crosby and Carey.

Nordgren (0-3) was charged with his the loss after making his first start in just under a month. The right-hander lasted just four innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits, a walk and a strikeout.

Gary concludes their six-game homestand and three-game series vs. Sioux Falls on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. RHP Daniel Minor (10-2, 2.76) makes his league-high 15th start for the RailCats while the Canaries have yet to announce their starter in the series finale.
