Game Highlights

GARY, Ind. —  A complete game shutout from Alex Gunn and two runs in the bottom of the eighth carried the Gary SouthShore RailCats to a 2-0 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Saturday afternoon. The win was the ‘Cats seventh straight and improved Gary’s record to 12-3 dating back to 2017 against Fargo-Moorhead.

Gunn (2-1) yielded seven hits (all singles), no walks, struck out a season-high seven and didn’t allow a single baserunner to reach third base. The southpaw retired eight in a row at one point, set down 13 of the final 15 he faced and needed just 93 pitches (71 strikes) in his first complete game shutout and second straight win.

Gary (9-5) ended the shutout with a pair of runs in the eighth. Back-to-back singles from Reggie Wilson and Andy De Jesus to open the frame gave Gary runners on the corners. Cole Fabio then ended the scoreless drought with a sacrifice fly to right-center, bringing home Wilson from third. De Jesus later stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error from Fargo-Moorhead catcher Charlie Valerio before scoring on Alex Crosby’s RBI single down the right field line. Crosby’s RBI single was his second of two hits on the day and extended his season-best on-base streak to 12 games.

Fargo-Moorhead (7-7) made things interesting in the top of the ninth after Leobaldo Pina singled with two outs, brining the tying run to the plate in Valerio. After a conversation on the mound between Gunn, catcher Andy Paz and pitching coach Alain Quijano, Gunn struck out Valerio on four pitches to end the game.
