'Cats win sixth straight on Princess & Pirates Night

GARY, Ind. —  Six innings from Daniel Minor, a pair of two-run triples and three shutout innings from the Gary bullpen led the RailCats to a 6-4 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in front of a season-high 4,989 fans on Princess and Pirates Night at U.S. Steel Yard. The chilly Friday night victory was the ‘Cats sixth straight and improves their home record to 5-2.

Gary (8-5) jumped in front 1-0 on an unearned run in the first. Randy Santiesteban reached on a fielding error from Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks third baseman Tommy Mendonca before Mitch Glasser advanced Santiesteban to third with a single to right-center for the first hit of the game. Colin Willis followed with a sacrifice fly down the left field line, bringing home Santiesteban for the first run of the series.

Fargo-Moorhead (7-6) took their first lead of the series with a pair of two-out runs in the top of the second. Randolph Oduber gave the RedHawks their first hit of the game with a two-out single before Charlie Valerio brought him home with an RBI double to left-center. Leobaldo Pina then put Fargo-Moorhead in front 2-1 with an RBI single to center.

The RailCats quickly responded with three runs in the bottom of the second to go up 4-2. D.K. Carey made it 3-2 with a two-run triple to right-center before Alex Crosby increased Gary’s lead to two with an RBI groundout to second, plating Carey from third.

The RedHawks evened the game at 4-4 on Valerio’s two-run home down the right field line in the top of the fourth. The homer was Valerio’s league-high-tying fifth and increased his team-high RBI total to 14.

Gary regained the lead again with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the fourth. Carey reached on a fielder’s choice before Crosby extended his season-high on-base streak to 10 games with a walk. Santiesteban followed with a two-run triple to right-center, scoring both Carey and Crosby.

Minor (3-0) earned his second straight win after allowing four runs in a season-high six innings. The right-hander yielded nine hits, struck out four and walked none in his fourth start. Jack Fowler (1) and Myles Smith (1) each recorded holds with one scoreless inning apiece while Gabe Perez (4) secured the win with the save in a perfect top of the ninth.

Will Solomon (1-2) was charged with the loss in his third start. The southpaw yielded six runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out five over five innings.

The RailCats resume their 10-game homestand vs. the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Saturday afternoon at 3:10 p.m. LHP Alex Gunn (1-1, 3.38) opposes RedHawks RHP Trey McNutt (0-1, 6.75) in the middle game of the series. Saturday’s game is CN Railroad Safety Day and Schererville, Griffith and Highland Community Night, presented by Fifth Third Bank. Saturday’s contest also features Pre-Game Autographs, courtesy of AccessAbilities, Inc., a Replica Jersey to the first 1,000 fans 13b and older, presented by Fifth Third Bank and Kids Run the Bases after the game.
