RailCats 12 hits not enough in 5-3 defeat to T-Bones

KANSAS CITY, Kan. —  12 hits from the Gary SouthShore RailCats wasn’t enough on Wednesday night as the Kansas City T-Bones evened the series with a 5-3 victory. Five different RailCat starters finished with multi-hit nights while the T-Bones offense scored four of their five runs with two outs.

Kansas City (2-3) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage with a pair of runs in the first. Zach Walters gave the T-Bones their first lead of the series with an RBI double off the top of the left field wall before Cal Towey doubled the KC lead with a two-out RBI single.

Gary (2-3) cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the second. Garrett Copeland tripled to right-center with one out before Andy Paz brought him home with an RBI groundout to the shortstop.

Kansas City regained their two-run lead with a two-out run in the bottom of the second. Angel Rosa reached on a one-out infield single before stealing second. Two batters later, Dylan Tice drove him in with a two-out RBI single to right.

The ‘Cats made it a 3-2 game with a run in the fifth. Reggie Wilson drew a leadoff walk before D.K. Carey advanced him to second with a bunt single. Alex Crosby then brought around Wilson to score with an RBI single to center for his first of two hits on the evening.

Gary tied the game at 3-3 with a two-out run in the top of the seventh. Randy Santiesteban tied the game and extended his on-base streak last season (including playoffs) to 23 games with an RBI single to left, scoring Cole Fabio.

The T-Bones answered right back though with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Nick Torres gave KC a 4-3 lead with an RBI single to right before Dexter Kjerstad made it 5-3 with an RBI single for the final run of the game.

Adam Quintana (0-1) was charged with the loss in his American Association debut for Gary. The right-hander allowed two runs on three hits and struck out one over 1.2 innings.

Barrett Astin (1-0) recorded the win in his season debut for KC after allowing one run on two hits over one inning. Relievers Carlos Diaz and Sam Street each recorded holds with scoreless relief appearances while the reigning American Association reliever of the year Cody Winiarski (2) secured the win for the T-Bones with a scoreless top of the ninth for his second save of the season.

The RailCats conclude their three-game series against the T-Bones on Thursday night at 7:10 p.m. LHP Alex Gunn (0-0, 3.60) makes his second start (first road start) against Kanas City’s RHP Luis Paula (0-1, 0.00).

The RailCats return home on Monday, May 28th for the start of a season-long 10-game homestand. Monday’s game is the inaugural regular-season game vs. the Chicago Dogs and is Ketchup Appreciation Day, a Memorial Day Matinee, All You Can Eat Night ($10 wristbands for hot dogs, popcorn and peanuts) and another MetroPCS Monday at U.S. Steel Yard.
