GARY, Ind. –  The Gary SouthShore RailCats lost their fourth consecutive game on Tuesday as the St. Paul Saints took the second game of the series by a score of 6-4. Gary’s record in the month of August is now 1-6 and are now a game and a half behind the Saints for the third position in the wild card race.

St. Paul (41-33) scored a pair of two-out runs in the top third to take the early lead in the middle game of the series. Back-to-back doubles from JJ Gould and Nate Hanson got the Saints on the board before a fielding error from Kris Goodman allowed Hanson to score the final run of the frame.

Gary (40-35) trimmed the St. Paul lead in half with a two-out run of their own in the bottom of the third. Alex Crosby extended his on-base streak to 10 games with a one-out infield single before Reggie Wilson advanced him to second with a groundout to second. Colin Willis then reached on an infield single, giving the RailCats runners on the corners. Goodman followed with an RBI single to left, plating Crosby from third.

The RailCats tied the game at 2-2 with another two-out run in the fourth. Andy De Jesus reached on a two-out hustle-double down the left field line before Chase Harris brought him home with an RBI infield single.

The Saints regained the lead with two more two-out runs in the fifth. Tim Colwell led off the inning with an infield single before stealing second. Hanson flew out to left for the second out of the frame, however, a throwing error from Wilson on the throw to third allowed Colwell to move up 90 feet. Anthony Gallas then gave St. Paul the lead with an RBI double before Tony Thomas doubled the Saints’ lead with an RBI single to left.

St. Paul added two insurance runs in the top half of the seventh inning. Gallas reached base with a one-out walk and scored on Thomas’ two-run home run off the scoreboard in left field to make the score 6-2 in favor of the Saints.

In the bottom of the eighth, the RailCats clawed back into the game. Willis led off with a single, and advanced to third on Goodman’s double. Frank Martinez followed with an RBI groundout to pull the RailCats within three. Goodman later scored when De Jesus reached base on Thomas’ error to make the score 6-4.

Southpaw Jeff McKenzie (1-3) started for the RailCats on Tuesday and suffered the defeat. He allowed three earned run (four total) on 10 hits, two walks and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. St. Paul’s Jeff Malm (1-1) pitched 3.1 innings in relief of starter Connor Little. He gave up no runs on one hit, a walk, and struck out two to earn the victory. Vinny Nittoli (2) pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the save.
