GARY, Ind. –  The Gary SouthShore RailCats dropped their third consecutive game after falling to the St. Paul Saints, 2-1, in 12 innings on Monday night at U.S. Steel Yard. With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the ninth, Wilfredo Gimenez thought he gave the RailCats a walk-off win with a sacrifice fly center, however, Colin Willis left third too soon on the flyout to center, resulting in a double play. Ryan Fitzgerald popped out to second for the final out of the inning and the game went on to extras.

St. Paul (40-33) pushed across the final run of the night in the top of the 12th on Breland Almadova’s broken bat, RBI infield single. Kes Carter led off the inning with a single to right before Mitch Delfino advanced him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Tanner Lubach followed Delfino with a single to center, giving St. Paul runners on the corners. Almadova then gave the Saints the lead and eventually the win with a broken bat, RBI infield single, bringing in Delfino from third.

Gary (40-34) took the opening lead for the first time in their last five games with a two-out run in the third. Andy De Jesus recorded the RailCats first hit with an infield single. Chase Harris followed with a walk before Alex Crosby reached on a fielder’s choice, giving the RailCats runners on the corners. Reggie Wilson then made ended the scoreless drought with an RBI single through the left side of the infield, scoring De Jesus for the game’s first run.

The Saints evened the game at 1-1 with an unearned run in the top of the fifth. Delfino and Lubach opened the inning with back-to-back singles before Almadova reached on a fielder’s choice, giving the Saints runners on corners. Almadova then stole second, however, a throwing error from catcher Gimenez allowed Delfino to score from third, tying the game.

Jake Matthys retired all six batters he faced, including four via the punchout, in two scoreless innings of relief while Jorge De Leon retired nine of the 10 batters he faced in three scoreless innings. Aryton Costa allowed an unearned run over six innings in a no-decision while Sam Myers retired both batters he faced in his professional baseball debut.

Jesse Pratt (2-4) was charged with his second consecutive loss after allowing a run on three hits in a 1/3 of an inning. Brandon Peterson (3-2) tossed two shutout innings in the win for the Saints, who have now won three straight.

Gary continues their three-game series vs. St. Paul on Tuesday night at 7:10 p.m. Southpaw Jeff McKenzie (1-2, 4.36) gets the ball for the RailCats while the Saints have yet to announce their starter for the middle game of the series.
