GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas –  A complete game performance from Alex Gunn and four RBIs from Wilfredo Gimenez on Sunday night led the Gary SouthShore RailCats (38-29) to a 10-1 win over the Texas AirHogs (25-41) in the series opener. Gary never trailed on the night and scored seven of their 10 runs with two outs.

Gunn (6-4) allowed just one run on six hits in his second complete game of the season. The southpaw struck out five and retired 12 in a row at one point. Gunn also didn’t allow a single baserunner to reach past first base prior to Michael Miller’s solo home run in the bottom of the eighth.
 
Gary jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the first to open the three-game series. Frank Martinez brought in the first run of the series with an RBI groundout up the first base line to Texas starting pitcher Kevin Hilton. Colin Willis doubled Gary’s lead with a two-out RBI single before Gimenez brought Willis around to score with an RBI double up the right field line for the final run of the inning.

The RailCats added another two-out run in the third to go up 4-0. Cameron Newell drew a five-pith walk to start the inning before Martinez and Willis loaded the bases with back-to-back singles. Gimenez followed Willis with an RBI fielder’s choice for his second of four RBIs in the game.
 
Gary extended their lead to 6-0 with two more two-out runs in the fifth. Gimenez brought in the first run of the inning with an RBI double before Ryan Fitzgerald followed with an RBI single. Gimenez made it 7-0 with his final RBI of the night before a wild pitch from Leuris Gomez scored Willis from third.

Miller ended the shutout with a one-out solo shot to left. The home run was his third of the year and snapped Gunn’s streak of 12 consecutive batters retired.

A passed ball and wild pitch allowed Gary to score the final two runs in the on the night. Hilton (0-1) was charged with the loss in first professional start. The right-hander allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks over five innings.

Gary continues their three-game road series against Texas on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Southpaw Billy Waltrip (1-3, 3.11) gets the ball for the AirHogs in the middle game of the series while the RailCats have yet to announce their starter.

Gary returns home to U.S. Steel Yard on Thursday, August 3rd for the start of a seven-game homestand. Thursday’s series opener vs. the reigning champion Winnipeg Goldeyes is at 7:10 p.m. and is Strike Out Stroke Night, courtesy of Methodist Hospitals. Thursday’s game also features a Food Truck Rally and is another Gerber and Thirsty Thursday.
