Costa’s gem propels RailCats to 2-1 win over Salina

GARY, Ind. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats snapped a season-high four-game home losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Salina Stockade. The RailCats improved to 4-0 against Salina and are 6-4 in the first 10 games of a 13-game homestand.

Gary (35-28) took an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the second. Frank Martinez reached on an error to begin the frame before moving up to second on a deep flyout to center off the bat of Randy Santiesteban. Martinez then advanced to third on a wild pitch before All-Star shortstop Ryan Fitzgerald drew a five-pitch walk. Andy De Jesus gave the RailCats the opening lead of the series with a sacrifice fly to shallow right, scoring Martinez from third.

The RailCats extended their lead to 2-0 with a run in the fifth. Andy De Jesus led off the inning with a double before a Chase Harris single gave Gary runners on the corners. Harris then swiped second for his team-high 17th stolen base before Alex Crosby brought home De Jesus with an RBI groundout to the left side.

Salina (9-53) got their only run in the top half of the eighth inning when Logan Trowbridge drove in Jordan Caillouet with an RBI double. Caillouet reached base on a fielder’s choice that appeared to be a routine double-play ball; however, De Jesus couldn’t get a handle on the baseball as he tried to turn the double play.

Aryton Costa (1-1) pitched six shutout innings for the RailCats in his first win of the season. Costa allowed three hits, walked one and struck out one in his second start of the year. Stockade starter Jared Koenig (1-1) suffered the loss despite keeping the RailCats offense at bay for most of the evening. He did allow two runs—one earned—on five hits, walked five and struck out none. RailCats southpaw Carlos Diaz (4) closed the game out with a four-out save.

Crosby batted leadoff for the RailCats and recorded two hits in his return to the lineup for the first time in over a month. No RailCat batter recorded a strikeout until the bottom of the eighth when Cameron Newell and Wilfredo Gimenez were both retired via a strikeout.

Gary and Salina continue their four-game, three-day series on Thursday night with a scheduled doubleheader. Game one starts at 1:10 p.m. and game two follows at 7:10 p.m. Two-time All-Star Charle Rosario (7-4, 3.32) faces the Stockade’s right-hander Jordan Cummings (1-1, 4.39) in game one while southpaw Alex Gunn (5-4, 4.08) opposes left-hander Brian Smith (1-9, 7.61) in game two.

Thursday’s doubleheader is another Gerber Collison & Glass Thursday and is also Opposite Day (Game one) and Comics Night (Game two).
