GARY, Ind. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats (26-21) were shutout by the Winnipeg Goldeyes (23-22), 5-0, in the series opener on Thursday evening. The RailCats have now been shut out twice in their last three games and are 5-10 in the opening game of a series.

Winnipeg jumped in front 2-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Andrew Sohn led off the game with a triple to left-center before David Rohm brought him home. Former MLB outfielder Reggie Abercrombie doubled the reigning champs’ lead to two with a two-out, solo home run to center. The home run for Abercrombie was his seventh of the year and increased his American Association career home run to total to 106.

The Goldeyes added another run in the third to go up by three. Rohm reached base on a leadoff single and scored a batter later when Josh Romanski hit an RBI double to right-center.

Winnipeg added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to further its lead. Shawn Pleffner doubled into right-center field to score Abercrombie and former RailCat Romanski to make the score 5-0.

Frank Martinez extended his on-base streak to 15 with a ninth inning walk and Reggie Wilson extended his on-base streak to 10 with a pair of hits. Alex Gunn (3-4) recorded his fifth quality start of the season for the RailCats in the loss. Gunn allowed three earned runs in 6.1 innings of work. He surrendered 10 hits, walked one and struck out three.

Edwin Carl (4-1) pitched seven innings of shutout ball for the Winnipeg Goldeyes in the win. He surrendered only two hits, walked two, and struck out six.

Gary continues their seven-game homestand on Friday at 7:10 p.m. vs. the reigning American Association Champion Winnipeg Goldeyes. Right-hander Marshall Pautsch (0-0, 6.00) makes his second pro start against All-Star Kevin McGovern (6-2, 2.53).
