Rosario, RailCats blank RedHawks, 2-0, in rubber game

GARY, Ind. — Two runs in the first two innings and 7.1 scoreless innings from Charle Rosario led the Gary SouthShore RailCats (26-20) to a 2-0 shutout over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (23-23) in the rubber game. The RailCats have now won five straight series and 11 of their last 15 games.

Rosario (6-3) allowed just four hits and a walk in his fourth consecutive win from on Wednesday night. Rosario, who was named to the American Association All-Star game for the second straight year on Wednesday morning, retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced.                                             

Gary took the opening lead for the first time in the series with a two-out run in the first. Reggie Wilson pulled a triple down into the right field corner for the first hit of the game before Randy Santiesteban brought him home with a two-out RBI infield single up the first base line.                              

The RailCats increased their lead to 2-0 on John Holland’s RBI single to left-center. Kris Goodman started the inning with an opposite field double down the first base line before scoring on Holland’s RBI single.                                                             

Carlos Diaz (2) retired two of three batters he faced in the eighth. Diaz allowed struck out the final hitter he faced and hasn’t allowed a run in six consecutive relief outings.                   

Drasen Johnson (5) pitched a perfect ninth inning to record the save. Johnson has three saves in his last four outings and not allowed a run since coming off the DL on June 2.

Holland and Wilson led the offense with two hits each. Wilson reached base a game-high three times and has now reached base in nine consecutive games while Holland recorded his 10th multi-hit game of the year.

Fargo-Moorhead’s Jose Almarante (2-4) pitched solidly as well. He pitched all eight innings for the RedHawks, giving up two earned runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out six.

Gary continues their seven-game homestand on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. vs. the reigning American Association Champion Winnipeg Goldeyes. Southpaw Alex Gunn (3-3, 4.29) opposes Goldeyes right-hander Edwin Carl (3-1, 5.11) in the series opener from U.S. Steel Yard.
