GARY, Ind. —The Gary SouthShore RailCats announced Wednesday that outfielder Cameron Newell has been activated from the inactive list. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Alex Weingarten has been released.
Newell, 25, has only played in two games this season for Gary SouthShore as he has been sidelined with an illness. In 2016, the outfielder batted .303 with 14 extra-base hits and 24 RBI. Newell spent time in the Marlins organization before joining the RailCats.
Weingarten, 23, has appeared in three games since signing with the club on June 19. He has a 1-2 record with a 4.26 ERA in Gary. Before joining the RailCats, Weingarten was the ABCA New York Region Pitcher of the Year at Cortland State (New York).
Gary returns home to U.S. Steel Yard on Monday, July 3rd for the start of a seven-game homestand. Monday’s game vs. Fargo-Moorhead is at 7:10 p.m. and is another MetroPCS Monday. Monday’s series opener against the RedHawks is also the inaugural Fourth of Juluau Pig Roast, presented by Berey Bros., and features Fireworks and Barefoot Hawaiian Fire Dancers.
