Welcome to the Ohio University Sports Administration Community Service page! Each year, the students in the Sports Administration program are involved with countless organizations and events on campus, but we also realize the importance of giving back to the school and community that have given us so much. This page will serve as a place for you to keep tabs on the MSA Classes of 2013 and 2014 and our efforts to make a positive impact on Athens and the surrounding area.

The Vision: Ohio University’s Sports Administration program understands that the program represents more than sports and strives to actively give back to our local Athens community.

The Mission: The chair of our Community Service Committee will provide and coordinate ample opportunities for fellow classmates to serve in the local Athens community during the school year.

2013-14 Goal: This year, our Sports Administration group is committed to reaching 1,000 total hours served over the course of the year. We will encourage our classmates to actively participate in the events planned by our committee. Not only will these events serve the greater good, but they will also provide a tremendous opportunity for our Sports Administration group to work together outside of the classroom setting.

To whom much is given, much is also expected, and we believe that regardless of where our careers in the sport industry take us, we also have the responsibility to give back to those in need. As Co-Community Service Chairs, we have set a goal of 1,000 community service hours between both MSA classes over the course of the upcoming school year, and are already off to a great start! On-campus students kicked off the year with a school supply drive, benefitting the Friends & Neighbors Community Choice Food Center, and then had the opportunity to spend an afternoon at the center organizing donations and assisting in clean-up efforts.

To help us in reaching our goal of 1,000 service hours, weekly volunteer opportunities will be provided to the students and we have already scheduled several other activities. Planned projects include Habitat for Humanity, Cardboard City, and hours assisting with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Athens County.

MSA Students Volunteer at Laurels of Athens Retirement Community

For the second year now, Sports Administration has been involved with the retirement community, Laurels of Athens. Every week, we visit with the residents during their activity session. We play board games, card games and work on puzzles. We enjoy each other's company and look forward to seeing the Laurels of Athens' residents on a weekly basis.

MSA students help out for Athens Beautification Day

On April 14th, 2013, a number of first year Ohio University Sports Administration students spent the afternoon making the city of Athens look beautiful. Andrew Kinn (’14), Matt Gottfried (’14), Preston McClellan (’14), David Preston (’14), Lindsae Lawrie (’14), Kelsey Thomas (’14), Tracey Hecht (’14), and Ryan O’Connor (’14) participated in Athens Beautification Day, put on by the OU’s student government.

The group spent their time planting flowers, laying mulch, and doing general garbage pick-up around The Plains Elementary School. This was an extremely successful event as this was the biggest volunteer turnout they have ever had at this event, and the OU Sports Ad program is proud to be a part of this effort.
