Dear Faithful Readers,

Happy August! It’s crazy to see how quickly time flies. As you may already know, the 2016 Olympics in Rio begins this Friday. I have been a huge fan of the Olympics ever since I was a little kid. Whether it be volleyball, soccer, track & field, etc., it’s always great to see the camaraderie among countries. Being the avid basketball fan I am, I will definitely be watching the U.S.A Men's & Women’s teams go for the gold.

Speaking of basketball, this week we wanted to share a story with you on a unique competition the Brooklyn Nets sales team is doing. With the Olympics just around the corner, they decided to hold their own Olympic-style games. The Olympics is full of exciting moments in sports and the Nets’ sales competition is a great way to capitalize on the event.

Enjoy the read and enjoy the games!

Cheers,

PROGRAM TITLE

Brooklyn Nets: "VIP Decathlon"

OBJECTIVES

The Brooklyn Nets set a goal to find a creative way to drive business through the summer months.  With the Summer Olympics right around the corner, the Nets decided to have their own internal games.  There are seven representatives with the Nets and the VIP Decathlon was created to inspire more pride and passion behind their work.  Each representative was given a country to represent based on his or her family’s origin.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Early Bird Discount

The Nets VIP Decathlon is a two-month contest that runs from July to August.  There are ten events during the Decathlon, one event for each week and the tenth event that runs across the entire two-month period.  The events consist of calls, event invites, hand written notes, out of office appointments, talk time, new sales and add-ons, referrals, and arena tours.  The tenth event, and main focus, is renewals.  An objective for the Decathlon is to avoid emails and be more personable with their customers.

Points are given to each rep based on what place they come in each week.
  • 1st place = 7 points
  • 2nd place = 6 points
  • 3rd place = 5 points
  • 4th place = 4 points
  • 5th place = 3 points
  • 6th place = 2 points
  • 7th place = 1 point

At the end of each week, the event winner receives a gold medal and a small prize from a grab bag.  Additionally, the rep with the most renewals each week will also receive a prize.  The overall gold, silver, and bronze medalists will receive a medal and a larger prize.  If the entire team hits the renewal goal over the two months, each team member will receive a prize.

PARTNERSHIP

The entire contest is run internally with the sales staff.

RESULTS

The VIP Decathlon thus far has been a success for the Nets.  The number of calls increased dramatically within the first week.  Event invites, as well as an open house maxed out quickly.  The sales staff is enjoying the contest; all while team camaraderie is being built.  The added value of pride and passion to the competition resulted in better outcomes than a typical sales competition, and the Nets plan to find new ways to incorporate that kind of drive to motivate their sales team.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Nets plan on running similar sales competitions in the future.  They believe that sales competitions should be pertinent to what is going on at the time, and with the Rio Olympics opening this month, this was a perfect opportunity for the Nets to incorporate a competition of their own.
