Chuck Greenberg

CEO
Greenberg Sports Group

For more than two decades, Chuck Greenberg has built his reputation as an innovative franchise owner and operator, corporate and sports attorney, dealmaker, advisor, and expert on the business and economics of major professional sports.

He has extensive experience in forming diverse ownership groups, negotiating purchase agreements, securing new venue financing, overseeing construction and capital improvement projects, and managing the day-to-day operations of franchises in a wide array of leagues and sports, particularly Major League Baseball (MLB), Minor League Baseball (MiLB) and the National Hockey League (NHL).

Most notably, Chuck is the former Managing Partner & CEO of the Texas Rangers, a role he assumed in 2010 after his group of investors (Rangers Baseball Express, LLC), which included Baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, acquired the Major League Baseball franchise from Tom Hicks and Hicks Sports Group following one of the most complex and challenging acquisition processes in the history of the sports industry.

Chuck is also well respected in Minor League Baseball as a franchise owner and operator. Currently, he serves as the Managing Partner of three MiLB franchises – the State College (Pa.) Spikes of the Class-A Short Season New York-Penn League, the Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Pelicans of the Class-A Advanced Carolina League, and the Frisco (TX) RoughRiders of the Class AA Texas League. Chuck also has the distinguished honor of serving on the Minor League Baseball Board of Trustees, a position to which he was elected in December 2007.

His experience as a professional baseball operator and leader began in 2002, when he formed and led an ownership group that purchased the Double-A Eastern League’s Altoona (Pa.) Curve. During his seven seasons as the club’s President & Managing Partner, the Curve were known as one of Minor League Baseball’s most successful, innovative and well-respected franchises.

Chuck’s accomplishments in the National Hockey League are highlighted by brokering the deal that landed Hockey Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux and renowned businessman Ron Burkle ownership of the bankrupt Pittsburgh Penguins in 1999 and saved the NHL franchise for Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Then, in 2007, he again represented the team in successful negotiations with the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, which resulted in a deal to build CONSOL Energy Center, a state-of-the-art, $325 million arena in downtown Pittsburgh and secured the future of the Penguins in the city for at least another 30 years.

A native of Pittsburgh, Chuck and his wife Jennifer have been married for 30 years and currently reside in Westlake, Texas. The couple has three adult sons; Jeff, Jack and Ben.
