Rhino forward Alex Johanson will continue his hockey career at Trine University.
Located in Angola, Indiana, Trine is a private institution founded in 1884. In April of 2016, the University announced that it would add a hockey team to the athletic department. With the season’s start scheduled for this fall, the Thunder’s hockey program will be the state of Indiana’s first NCAA DIII program. In its inaugural season, Trine’s hockey team will play in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association which includes the alma maters of several Rhino alumni.
As a Rhino, the Illinois forward posted 43 goals and 54 assists for a total of 97 points, making him second on the team in points and third in goals scored. Playing all but one game during the season, Johanson also led the team in powerplay goals. His ability to score is partly a result of his physicality. He explains, “You’ve got to get gritty to succeed in this game. At least with my style of play. Nothing fancy, just a desire to want it.” Additionally, Johanson’s maturity and commitment to the team made him a captain who led by example.
Former Rhinos Johanson and Zach Huggins will face off twice this season when Trine plays Finlandia in November and January.
Wishing Alex the best of luck in Indiana, the Rhinos would also like to thank him for his dedication to the organization!
