'Bolts Sweep Rascals: 3-1, 9-207/26/2008 12:35 AM
O'FALLON, Mo. -- Clutch hitting from Brett Amyx and stellar pitching from starters Amos Ramon and Stephen Flake lifted the Windy City ThunderBolts (30-28) to a doubleheader sweep of the host River City Rascals (26-33), 3-1 and 9-2, on Friday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
In the opener, Amyx came to the plate with two outs, the bases loaded and the game tied 1-1 in the seventh inning. On a 1-2 pitch from River City closer Jonathan Miller, Amyx sent a chopper into right field to plate teammates Mike Sullivan and Mike Coles. The two-run single gave the victory to Ramon (4-3), who retired the first 10 batters he faced en route to allowing one run on four hits over six innings. Matt Petty pitched a perfect seventh for his tenth save of the season. Brian Logan (2-2) suffered the loss for the Rascals, having allowed Sullivan and Coles to both reach base on a base hit and a walk to begin the pivotal rally. In the winning cause, Sullivan and Amyx each finished the game with three hits in four at-bats. In a rain-shortened nightcap, ThunderBolts starter Stephen Flake (6-2) twirled 5 2/3 solid innings while striking out five and allowing only a pair of River City solo home runs. The victory for Flake tied the right-hander with Ross Stout for the team lead in victories. The ThunderBolts offense pounded Rascals starter Jake Laber (0-3) and reliever Gary Lee, tallying one run in the second inning on Phil Hawke's eighth home run of the season, two runs in the fourth, two more in the fifth and four runs in the sixth inning to put the game away and lend Flake a comfortable cushion. Game 1 starting pitcher Amos Ramon received the start at second base and contributed an RBI single. Ramon would have notched a second RBI single, recorded in the top of the seventh inning to stretch the lead to 10-2, but heavy rain leading to unplayable conditions prompted the umpiring crew to call the game with one out in the bottom of the seventh. The 'Bolts and Rascals wrap up the three-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. Left-hander Isaac Hess will take the mound for Windy City in his third spot start of the season. |
