Fraud Detection and Prevention

One of the biggest challenges for the gem market moving into e-commerce (remote trade), is to create a common language between traders from all over the world (e.g. online vendors), professional gemologists and consumers, and to promise a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get process.

Under the leadership of Menahem Sevdermish, GemeWizard's research and development team in collaboration with the EGC (European Gemological Center) developed and digitized the global standard classification algorithm for gems with an automatic classification engine (combined color & contextual). This unique dictionary holds over 700 million unique gem classifications and oddities knowledge base.
The technology and knowledge base provides the capability to organize gem market like never before:

  • Standardization - injective (one to one correspondence) categorization/classification of gem items based on color and contextual characteristics.

  • Oddities* engine - scan database and reveal oddities for online gem vertical. The system highlights the oddities (e.g. misrepresentation or miscategorization) and can fix them, and in that way it helps the marketplace to avoid a bad buyer experience, detect potential fraud and monitor vendor quality.

* Examples of Oddities - Missing Carat Info, Undisclosed Synthetic Origin, Improperly disclosed Treatment, Incorrect Gem Category, Color Mismatch to Gem Type, Unknown Gem Type, etc.
