(July 19, 2018) — The York Revolution’s late-game comeback bid fell short as they lost 8-6 to the Lancaster Barnstormers on Thursday afternoon at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The Revs dropped three of the four games in the series and are now 37-36 overall and 5-5 in the second half. York returns home to open a six-game homestand on Friday night.
The Revs broke a scoreless tie in the top of the second inning on Luis Cruz’ two-out RBI single to left field off Lancaster starter Nate Reed. Ryan Dent, who doubled with one out, scored on the play to put the Revs up 1-0.
The Barnstormers answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame off Revs starter Robert Carson. Ryan Casteel doubled to lead of the inning and scored to tie the game on KC Hobson’s RBI single off the wall in right. Later in the inning, Hobson stole second base with Trayvon Robinson on third and Robinson came home to score on the throw to second base. Another run scored on Carlos Garcia’s RBI single up the middle, giving Lancaster a 3-1 advantage.
Carson kept it a three-run game until the sixth inning, when the Barnstormers scored four more runs. Blake Gailen led off the inning with a solo homer to right, Nate Coronado added an RBI single and Garcia brought two more runs home on a two-RBI double down the third base line, making it a 7-1 game. The final three runs were unearned after Alexi Casilla made a throwing error earlier in the inning.
Reed finished off his day with a scoreless seventh inning. The lefty gave up just one run on five hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks over his seven innings.
Gailen added a solo homer, his second of the game, in the seventh inning off Revs reliever Mike McGee to extend the Barnstormers lead to 8-1.
Jared Lakind came out of the bullpen for the Barnstormers to pitch the eighth, which was good news for the Revs who tagged the southpaw for five runs.
Jared Mitchell led off with a single, Casilla reached on an error and Isaias Tejeda and Melky Mesa each followed with RBI singles. Three batters later, Cuevas delivered a two-out, two-RBI double over Grant Desme’s head in left, and Cruz capped the rally with an RBI single to right-center as the Revs cut their deficit to 8-6.
The Revs brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after Tejeda doubled off the wall in left-center with two outs, but Barnstormers closer Matt Reynolds struck out Mesa to end the game, striking out the side in the ninth inning.
Reed (7-3) earned his league-high-tying seventh win while Carson (6-4) was handed the loss. Reynolds notched his 17th save of the season.
