(June 30, 2018) -- The York Revolution stayed hot and swept their day-night doubleheader with the Somerset Patriots, winning 4-0 and 9-3 on Saturday at PeoplesBank Park. The Revs have tied a season-high with four straight wins and clinched the series win over Somerset, while also securing their first doubleheader sweep of the season.
Game 1 was a scheduled seven-inning game while Game 2 was a nine-inning contest.
Jonathan Sanchez started Game 1 for the Revs and didn’t waste any time making a statement in his season debut, as the former big-league lefty struck out the side in the first.
The Revs got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second. Second baseman Nick King drilled a two-RBI double to the left-center gap and catcher Roger Diaz, making his season debut, hit an RBI single to right. The Revs went up 3-0 after getting five hits off Patriots starter Rick Teasley.
Sanchez went on to retire the first nine batters of the game and allowed just one infield hit in four shutout innings with six strikeouts and no walks.
The Revs tacked on one more run in the fifth on Jose Cuevas’ two-out RBI single on a hot shot to shortstop off Alfredo Rodriguez’ glove, pushing the lead to 4-0.
Dominic Severino worked two scoreless innings in relief, making his first appearance since June 17, and Ricardo Gomez pitched a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts to close out the combined shutout win for the Revs.
Severino (4-3) earned the win while Teasley (3-3) suffered the complete-game loss.
Game 2 was scoreless through two innings, but the Revs’ bats broke out in the third against Somerset starter Trevor Foss.
Jared Mitchell worked a base-loaded two-out walk to force in the first run of the game before the Revs pounded out four consecutive hits. Melky Mesa singled up the middle to drive in two, Michael Burgess followed with an RBI bloop single to left and Ryan Dent capped off the inning with an RBI single to right, making it 6-0 Revs. It was Dent's second hit of the inning, having led off with a double.
The Revs got two more runs in the fifth off Pats reliever Nate Roe to extend their lead to 8-0. Burgess doubled to right-center to bring home the first run and Dent singled to left for his third hit of the night to bring home the second run in the inning.
Somerset got three runs back in the top of the sixth when Kyle Roller hit a three-run homer over the wall in right with two outs to make it an 8-3 game, ending a 12.1-inning scoreless streak for Revs starter Mitch Atkins. Atkins retired the next batter to finish six strong innings, allowing just the three runs on four hits. He struck out one batter and walked three.
The Revs tacked on one more run in the eighth when Alexi Casilla singled to left to score Tyson Gillies, pushing the Revs’ advantage to 9-3.
Atkins (5-3) earned his fifth straight win while Foss (2-5) suffered the loss, allowing six runs in three innings of work.
Notes: The Revs earned their first doubleheader sweep since May 7, 2016 at Southern Maryland and their first at home since May 4, 2016 vs. Bridgeport. It was the second doubleheader sweep of Somerset in franchise history with the other occurring on September 15, 2012, also at home. Game 1 was the Revs’ fifth shutout win of the season. It was the second time this season the Revs have held an opponent to two hits, tying a season-low in hits allowed. Sanchez became the first Revs pitcher to strike out the first three batters of a game since Frank Gailey in 2016. The opening game victory was the 600th regular season win on staff for Revs manager Mark Mason and third base/hitting coach Enohel Polanco, who both joined the franchise in 2010. In Game 2, all nine Revs starters reached base safely; seven of the nine had at least one hit, six had at least one RBI and seven scored at least one run. The Revs have totaled double-digit hits in four consecutive games.
