(June 15, 2018) -- The York Revolution were held to just four hits in a 5-0 shutout loss to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs Friday night in front of 4,111 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, MD.
Fresh off a seven-run outburst the previous night at Somerset, the Revs were stifled by Blue Crabs starter Daryl Thompson, who retired the first seven batters he faced, and got better as the game went on.
Thompson received early run support when Jon Griffin lined a two-out RBI single to right-center field off Revs starter Pat McCoy in the bottom of the first, making it 1-0 Blue Crabs.
The Crabs struck for three more runs in the second inning to go up 4-0. Ryan Strausborger and Edwin Garcia each had an RBI single, and Strausborger eventually scored from third on a wild pitch.
McCoy settled in after his rough first two innings and didn’t give up a run over his next four frames while retiring nine straight, but the Revs couldn’t get anything going against Thompson. The Crabs’ veteran right-hander worked seven shutout innings allowing just two hits with five strikeouts.
Thompson did walk four batters, including two in the sixth inning, but got out of a first-and-third, one-out jam with an inning-ending double play.
With the game still 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh, McCoy was lifted after six and one-third innings. Southern Maryland scored again to make it 5-0 after McCoy exited, plating an inherited runner on a fielder's choice. McCoy was charged with five runs on eight hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
Thompson (3-2) earned the win while McCoy (0-2) suffered the loss, as the Revs were shut out offensively for his second consecutive start.
The Revs and Crabs will play two seven-inning games in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 5:35 p.m. Joe Van Meter will start Game 1 for the Revs and Jay Gause, making his return from the disabled list, will start Game 2.
Notes: McCoy has retired 11 and nine consecutive batters in his last two starts, respectively. York's four hits matched a season-low for a nine-inning game. The Revs slip back to .500 overall at 21-21, and are even both at home (10-10) and on the road (11-11). It was York's first loss vs. Southern Maryland this season (4-1). Thompson's win was the 44th of his Blue Crabs and Atlantic League career, moving into a tie for eighth in league history.
