The York Revolution sent 12 men to the plate in the first inning, scoring a franchise record seven runs in the frame on their way to a 13-4 victory over the New Britain Bees on Saturday night at PeoplesBank Park, improving to 21-15 in the second half and remaining just one game out of first place in the Freedom Division.
The eruption began when Alexi Casilla walked with one away in the first and Isaias Tejeda followed by lining a ball out to right field, just inside the foul pole to make it 2-0 on his 15th home run of the season. With two outs, the Revs began a seven hit barrage. Telvin Nash blasted a home run over the Arch Nemesis in left to give the Revs a 3-0 lead. Jared Mitchell followed Nash with a double to left center, and Chase Simpson made it back-to-back doubles, launching one off the wall in right-center to make it 4-0. Ryan Dent hit an RBI single back up the middle for a 5-0 lead. After Travis Witherspoon reached on an infield single, Alonzo Harris and Casilla followed with back-to-back RBI hits to give the Revs a 7-0 advantage. It was the most runs scored in a first inning in franchise history, and the most consecutive hits (seven) in a game for the Revs this season.
Nash singled to center to lead off the second and was brought home later in the inning on a Dent single to left field to make it 8-0.
The Revs continued their outburst in the third, setting the table as Casilla reached on an infield hit and Tejeda followed with a walk. Michael Burgess became the ninth different Rev to enter into the hit column with a single up the middle to score Casilla. Nash followed with a double down the left field line to plate Tejeda making it 10-0, and leaving him a triple shy of the cycle just three innings into the ballgame. Mitchell followed with a sac fly to right to pad the lead to 11-0.
The Revs weren’t done as Dent led off the fourth with a walk, and Witherspoon followed by launching a home run over the fence in center field, just left of the batter’s eye, to give the Revs their largest lead of the season at 13-0.
Starter Steve Janas did not allow a run in his first four frames, stranding five in the first three innings. The Bees got to Janas in the fifth, stringing together four singles and scoring three runs, with Jordan Hinshaw extending his on-base streak to 27 games in a row with a two-RBI single followed by a Jovan Rosa run-scoring bloop single to cut it to 13-3. Janas finished the fifth to earn the win, his fourth of the year and third consecutive victory.
The Bees plated an unearned run in the eighth as a passed ball allowed Craig Maddox to move to third ahead of a sac fly from Jake McGuiggan to make it 13-4.
Closer Brad Allen came on for the ninth and recorded two strikeouts to finish off the rout.
The Revs look to earn a split with the Bees in the finale on Sunday with first pitch between York LHP Logan Williamson (5-8, 5.10) and New Britain LHP Nick Greenwood (1-4, 5.40) set for 1 p.m. It’s a busy day at PeoplesBank Park, featuring Circus Day courtesy of D.F. Nash’s home run was the 34th of his Revs career, tying him for 10th most in Revs history with Matt Esquivel (2008-09). Nash has done so in just 133 games played with York. All nine starters tallied a hit by the third inning, and all nine drove in at least one run in the ballgame by the fourth inning. Seven Revs had multi-hit games. The nine-run victory ties the largest winning margin of the season. The Revs’ two homer first inning was the fifth time this year they have hit two home runs in a frame. The Revs’ seven run first inning was the most runs scored in a first inning in franchise history, and was the 5th time the Revs enjoyed a 5+ run inning against the Bees this season. Their eight hits in the frame were the most in any inning this season, and the seven straight hits were also a season best.
