It was a big fifth inning for Alonzo Harris, gunning down a potential run at the plate in the top half and launching a three-run homer in the bottom half, lifting the York Revolution to a 4-3 win over the Long Island Ducks on Wednesday night in front of 3,767 fans at PeoplesBank Park. The Revs take two of three in the series, improving to 15-11 in the second half and remaining just two games back in the division.
Long Island opened the scoring in the top of the first against Revs starter Steve Janas. Quintin Berry led off the game with a single and after a sacrifice bunt and a ground out, Marc Krauss came through with a single to center, giving the Ducks the 1-0 lead.
The Ducks made it 2-0 in the third with an RBI groundout from Jordan Pacheco to score Dan Lyons who led off the frame with a single through the left side.
After Ducks starter Alfredo Simon retired nine of the first ten batters, including seven out of eight on strikeouts at one point, the Revs got on the board in the fourth when Telvin Nash laced a single off the Arch Nemesis in left to bring home Isaias Tejeda, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Simon rolled a double play ball to prevent any further damage.
The Ducks answered right back in the fifth as Janas ran into trouble, walking the bases full. The Revs called on lefty Jared Gaynor who gave up a single to Ruben Gotay to score Delta Cleary, Jr., but Harris charged in on the ball in center and fired a strike to the plate to get Pacheco, with Tejeda applying the tag on his foot as he tried to lunge past the Revs’ catcher. After a walk to Elmer Reyes, Gaynor (1-0) got Giovanny Alfonzo to sky out to left to escape, only down 3-1.
Harris continued his success at the plate in the bottom of the frame. After back-to-back singles from Carlos Triunfel and Ryan Dent, Harris launched his team-leading 14th home run of the year over the Arch Nemesis in left to give the Revs a 4-3 lead. It was Harris’ sixth home run in the last nine games and second in as many nights.
The Revs bullpen would hold it down the rest of the way with Luke Westphal, Chase Huchingson, Joe Van Meter, and Brad Allen each working a scoreless frame. Allen secured his 14th save with a three-up, three-down ninth.
With the win the Revs have now won nine straight series finales, going 6-1-2 in those series, and improving to 6-3 in rubber games.
York will hit the road on Thursday for a seven-game trip, beginning with a four-game series at New Britain. The Revs will send Logan Williamson (4-7, 4.53) to the mound to face off with Bees righty Jon Pettibone (1-4, 4.04). Harris extended his hitting streak to 12 in a row with a two-hit game, his 32nd multi-hit game of the year. He has reached base safely in all 34 home games he has played, the second longest streak all-time by a Rev. Tejeda also enjoyed a two-hit game, his 34th of the season, extending his hitting streak to 10 straight games. Jared Mitchell reached base safely in his 22nd consecutive home game, tied for the eighth longest streak in Revs history with Kennard Jones (2008). The Revs move to 15-11, four games over .500, their best mark of the season.
