The York Revolution sent 12 men to the plate in the sixth inning, scoring six unearned runs on their way to a 9-1 stomping of the Sugar Land Skeeters to win a rained-shortened finale 9-1 on Sunday afternoon at PeoplesBank Park. The Revs improve to 9-8 in the second half, remaining just half a game out of first place, and claim the 400th regular season victory at PeoplesBank Park in franchise history.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first three innings as Logan Williamson and Jake Hale were tangled in a pitchers’ duel.
The Revs got the scoring started in the fourth inning with Jared Mitchell leading off the frame with a double. Carlos Triunfel advanced him to second on a sacrifice bunt, and Mitchell came into score two batters later on a Travis Witherspoon fielder’s choice groundout, giving the Revs a 1-0 lead.
Sugar Land tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth with an unearned run. With Joe Benson and Josh Prince aboard, Williamson tried to pick Benson off of second, but his throw went into center field, moving both runners into scoring position. The next batter was Anthony Giansanti who evened the score with a sac fly to right.
The tie game didn’t last long. Giansanti made two errors in the field to begin the sixth, and Triunfel sharply grounded a two-strike single up the middle to load the bases. The Revs scored two runs in the inning on sacrifice flies, one from Chase Simpson and one from Ryan Dent to put York ahead 3-1. Alonzo Harris followed with an RBI single to left to make it 4-1, and two batters later it was a two-run single from Isaias Tejeda that pushed the Revs lead to 6-1. Michael Burgess, up for the second time in the inning, kept the line moving with a seeing-eye single through the right side to give York a 7-1 advantage.
In the eighth, the Revs continued their productive day at the plate. Harris led off the inning with a single to left. Alexi Casilla followed with a double down the right field line, scoring Harris and extending his hitting streak to 21 consecutive games. Two batters later Burgess grounded into a double play and Casilla came into score to make it a 9-1 game.
Williamson (4-6) picked up his fourth win of the season for the Revs and 19th with York in his career, allowing just the one unearned run in six innings. Luke Westphal tossed a scoreless seventh, Joe Van Meter did the same in the eighth, and as Ricardo Gomez was entering for the ninth, the skies opened and the rain began to fall. After waiting more than 30 minutes, the game was called final after eight innings of play.
The Revs are off on Monday for the Brooks Robinson Classic golf outing and will resume their homestand on Tuesday evening when they welcome the Bridgeport Bluefish to PeoplesBank Park for a three-game series. The Revs have now won six consecutive series finales, going 3-1-2 in those series. Casilla’s 21-game hitting streak ties him for sixth longest in Revs history along with Jose Herrera (2010) and Justin Greene (2014); it is the longest active streak in the Atlantic League and the league’s second-longest of the season. Casilla has hit safely in 25 of his 29 games played this season and has recorded 11 multi-hit games. When Casilla has been in the lineup this season the Revs are 17-12. Triunfel extended his hitting streak to eight straight games. Williamson’s win is his third in his last four starts; his 19 wins ranks fourth in Revs history, as he is now one shy of matching Wayne Franklin for third on the club’s all-time list. Williamson owns a 1.83 ERA over his last six appearances (five starts). The six-run inning was the Revs’ biggest since an eight-run frame in a 12-5 win in Bridgeport on June 28. York improves to 9-5 vs. Sugar Land on the season, having won seven of the 10 meetings in York. The rain-shortened game is the 14th in club history and first since May 2, 2016, a 4-1 win vs. Bridgeport in seven innings.
