The York Revolution and Sugar Land Skeeters played nine scoreless innings on Sunday afternoon, but in the tenth, Carlos Triunfel lifted a sac fly to right field, bringing home pinch runner Alonzo Harris for the only run of the ballgame as York swept Sugar Land for the first time in team history, winning 1-0 at PeoplesBank Park in the final game of the season’s first half.
The walk-off was the Revs’ second of the season as they did so last Sunday as well in the resumption of a suspended game against the Barnstormers, also via a sacrifice fly. The sweep was also the second of the season, and the first since defeating Somerset in three straight to take the opening series at home.
Sunday was a pitchers’ duel throughout as Frank Gailey and Michael Nix matched one another pitch for pitch. Gailey allowed five hits over seven innings, but three of the hits stayed in the infield. He recorded 15 of his outs through the air, and tallied his longest outing since throwing eight innings of one-run ball against Bridgeport on May 14th. Nix pushed his scoreless innings streak to 33 in-a-row, tossing six scoreless, allowing just two hits, and striking out six.
Michael Click, Brad Allen, and Ricardo Gomez each fired a scoreless frame following the effort of Gailey, as the Revs staff teamed up for their third shutout of the season with Gomez earning his second win of the campaign.
In the home half of the tenth, Michael Burgess led off with a double off the wall in left-center field against former Rev Manny Corpas. Harris then entered as a pinch runner, and Jared Mitchell was walked intentionally. Luis Cruz then laid down a sacrifice bunt to push the runners ahead to second and third, bringing up Triunfel, with the winning run 90 feet away and one out. Triunfel put together a great at-bat, fouling off several two-strike pitches before lifting one in the air to right field. Joe Benson came in to make the catch and fired home, but with the speedy Harris coming down the line, the throw was not nearly in time as Harris dove across the plate, the Revs’ bench emptied, and Triunfel was given a celebratory ice bath.
The win capped off the first half of the season for the Revs who finish with a record of 28-42 but win their final three games. York has also now won five of its last six at home, and six of its last eight.
Second half play will begin Monday night as York will make the trip to Bridgeport to open a four-game series. The Revs will send Steve Janas (1-3, 5.16) to the mound to face off with Jonathan Albaladejo (4-6, 4.88). Darrell Henry will be on the call at 6:50 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:12. Notes: The Revs have won five consecutive meetings against the Skeeters, breaking the previous record of three straight wins. York improves to 7-3 vs. Sugar Land, 5-1 at home. Sunday’s game marked the fourth time in club history that a game went into extra innings scoreless, and the third time it happened in a nine-inning contest (first time since July 31, 2010 at Southern Maryland). It was only the second time that it happened at PeoplesBank Park and first since June 23, 2007 when the Revs defeated Somerset 1-0 in 13 innings in the sixth game in stadium history. It was the Revs’ first 1-0 decision of the season.
