ROUGH NIGHT IN BRIDGEPORT

(June 27, 2017 – Bridgeport, Ct.):  The York Revolution suffered their most lopsided loss of the season, 11-0 to the Bridgeport Bluefish on Tuesday evening at Harbor Yard.

The Bluefish totaled 18 hits on the night, with Tony Abreu headlining the attack by going 5-for-5 with four RBI.

Bluefish starter Cory Riordan (5-3) combined on a five-hit shutout, holding the Revs to five singles and one walk over seven innings while striking out six.  He retired 14 of his first 15 batters, limiting the Revs to just a Luis Cruz single through the first 4.2 innings.

Bridgeport inched out to an early lead before blowing the game open late.  In the first, the Bluefish scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jose Gil, as an attempted double play turn pulled first baseman Michael Burgess off the bag.  While Burgess argued that he made the tag, Luis Hernandez came home from third to score the game’s first run.

Revs starter Frank Gailey settled in, allowing nothing further until the fourth.  He appeared on his way to another clean inning, but after a close two-strike pitch to Jonathan Galvez, the Bluefish first baseman battled to stay alive and ripped a two-out double down the left field line before scoring on an RBI single to center by Abreu to make it 2-0.

Gailey rebounded with a scoreless fifth, but ran into trouble in the sixth.  Gil opened the frame with a single to center, and Andrew Lambo reached on a liner that deflected off Gailey’s glove for an infield hit.  With one out, Abreu came through with another RBI single to center.  After a late throw home, catcher Isaias Tejeda attempted to throw out Lambo advancing to third but sailed the throw down the left field line, allowing another run to score on the Revs’ first error in four games.  Angelys Nina then drove an RBI double to left-center to make it 5-0, ending Gailey’s night.  D’Arby Myers added an RBI double to nearly the same spot with two outs in the inning as the Bluefish held a 6-0 lead.

Bridgeport made it back-to-back four-run innings, batting around in the seventh.  Three consecutive singles against reliever Waldis Joaquin loaded the bases, with the third of those coming from Lambo who lined it off the upper body of the Revs’ righty.  Joaquin exited after a bases loaded walk to Galvez which pushed the first run home.  Fellow reliever Chris Dula’s first offering was a wild pitch as another run crossed.  Abreu then punched an RBI single the other way, and Angel Rosa capped the outburst with a sac fly to deep left.

The Bluefish added one more on another Abreu RBI single in the eighth.  Bridgeport logged at least one hit in every inning, with multiple hits in five of their eight innings on offense.

Gailey (5-6) suffered the loss, charged with six runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings.

Notes: Witherspoon extended his hitting streak to eight consecutive games with a leadoff single in the sixth; he then stole his 10th bag, tying Alonzo Harris for the team lead.  The defeat ties the Revs’ fourth largest in a shutout game in team history, and is their biggest in a shutout loss in nearly two years.  The 18 hits allowed tied a season-high for the third time.  Abreu is the first opposing hitter to total five hits in a game against the Revs in over a year; he is the first Bluefish to total five hits in a game this season.  York righty Steve Janas (1-3, 4.82) will face Jonathan Albaladejo (4-6, 5.05) on Wednesday night at 7:12 p.m., looking to end York’s three-game skid and Bridgeport’s three-game winning streak.  Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK app beginning at 6:50 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
