The York Revolution and Lancaster Barnstormers began the day with a resumption of Friday’s suspended game, as York came back from down 5-1 to win it 6-5 in walk-off fashion, before falling 9-4 in game two, splitting the doubleheader in front of 5,031 at PeoplesBank Park on Sunday.
Game 1:
Lancaster led the game 5-1 in the top of the fifth when Friday’s game was suspended. Logan Williamson took over for Steve Janas when things resumed on Sunday, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings to keep his team in the game.
Meanwhile the momentum from Saturday night’s win carried over as Angel Franco took Rommie Lewis deep to left for a two-run homer in the fifth, to cut the deficit to 5-3.
The offense continued to chip away. In the seventh it was Ryan Dent coming through with a single up the middle to score Luis Cruz, and then Travis Witherspoon took Cody Hall deep the opposite way in the eighth, to tie the game at 5-5.
Hawtin Buchanan and Ricardo Gozmez held the fort in the eighth and ninth, respectively, bringing the offense back to the plate with the game tied. Franco began the inning with a double off the Arch Nemesis to quickly put the winning run in scoring position. Dayron Varona followed with a single through the left side, and then Cruz skied a pitch to deep right field, which was dropped my Lastings Milledge, but would’ve plated the winning run regardless, as he was credited with a sacrifice fly on the Revs’ first walk-off of the season.
Game 2:
The Barnstormers responded with the long ball in game two. Sean Halton launched his 13th of the year, a three-run shot to left to plate Blake Gailen and K.C. Hobson who each reached with singles, as Lancaster jumped ahead 3-0 in the first.
Hobson then added a solo home run in the third, his league-leading 20th of the year, to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Revs responded with an unearned run in the bottom of the third as Ryan Dent reached on an error and was brought home on an Alonzo Harris single to left-center, to put the Revs on the board at 4-1.
With two down in the fourth, Curtis Partch hit Tyler Clark with a pitch and then walked Rico Noel, setting up Gailen for a three-run blast to push the deficit to 7-1.
The Barnstormers would add a solo home run from Josh Bell in his first at-bat of the season in the sixth, and then a final blow in the seventh on a passed ball, allowing Hobson to come in from third after reaching on a triple.
The Revs would rally in the seventh with three hits and an error, breaking up the complete game bid from Barnstormer starter Brad Bergesen. Varona came through with a bases-clearing three-run double, prompting the move to the bullpen, but Kaohi Downing prevented anything more, securing a 9-4 Barnstormer win and a double header split. The Revs took two of three in the series, and have now won six of their ten games against the Barnstormers, the most against any opponent this season.
York will hit the road for a four-game set in Bridgeport beginning Monday night at 7:12 p.m. when Jay Gause (1-0, 5.06) makes his first start for the Revs. Darrell Henry will be on the air at 6:50 p.m. with the pregame show on 1350 WOYK as well as online at woyk1350.com and on the WOYK App.
Notes: The suspended game was just the third in regular season play in Revolution history. Benches cleared in the third inning of game two after Halton was hit by a pitch; Revs catcher Isaias Tejeda and Lancaster centerfielder Trayvon Robinson were both ejected. Lancaster shortstop Vladimir Frias was ejected for arguing a fair ball call on a ground out an inning later. The Revs have welcomed more than 5,000 fans through the gates on three consecutive openings at PeoplesBank Park, tying a stadium record for consecutive crowds of 5,000 or more (July 1-5, 2008).
