SLAM SPOILS COMEBACK

Down six at one point, the York Revolution fought back, battling to knot the score before a Brian Bistagne seventh inning grand slam broke the tie, lifting the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to a 12-9 win and handing the Revs their seventh straight loss on Tuesday evening at PeoplesBank Park.

It was a slugfest from the start with the Blue Crabs tallying a run in each of the first two innings with Michael Snyder and Jose Lozada coming through with run-scoring singles against York starter Curtis Partch.

The Revs answered with a sac fly from Ryan Dent in the second to score Luis Cruz, but the Blue Crabs responded in the following frame with a two run homer to left-center from Snyder. The Blue Crabs plated three in the inning, extending the lead to 5-1.

The slugfest continued with an Alonzo Harris deep fly, over the Arch Nemesis in left in the home half of the third. It was Harris’ second home run of the season, both coming within the last week of play.

Snyder continued to light it up for the Blue Crabs at the plate in the fourth, taking Partch deep to straightaway center field, this time a three-run shot, to give Southern Maryland an 8-2 advantage. Snyder reached base four times in the game and tallied a season-high six RBI on the night.

The Revs did not go quietly, however. In the fifth they capitalized on an error from Zach Wilson on an errant flip to first that allowed Michael Burgess, who led off the inning with a walk, to come in to score. The next batter was Dent who lifted his second sac fly of the game to center field to bring home Cruz, and then Franco, who reached on the error, scored on a Carlos Triunfel ground out, cutting the deficit to 8-7.

The Revs continued their comeback in the sixth with Harris reaching on a leadoff walk. Harris would steal second and move to third on a groundout. Then with two outs and Harris still at third, Franco skied what looked to be an inning-ending popup to second, but Bistagne was unable to find the ball, dropping it on a last second effort, allowing Harris to score the tying run.

Bistagne would atone for his miscue. After the first three batters in the seventh reached against Luke Westphal, the Revs called upon Hawtin Buchanan in an attempt to escape the jam. Bistagne was the first batter Buchanan faced, and on the first pitch he launched his first home run of the season over the Arch Nemesis in left to break the game open, as Southern Maryland retook the lead at 12-8 on the grand slam.

Isaias Tejeda would hit a solo home run in the eighth and the Revs would bring the tying run to the plate against Cody Eppley in the ninth, but the closer escaped, earning his 18th save of the season in as many opportunities.

The Revs look to rebound on Wednesday in game three of the four-game series as York’s Logan Williamson (1-5, 5.55) will face off with Southern Maryland’s Daryl Thompson (5-3, 2.93) at 6:30 p.m. at PeoplesBank Park.
