York Revolution (4) at Somerset Patriots (5)
June 08, 19 - 7:05 PM
TD Bank Ballpark - Somerset, NJ

Game Notes »
(June 8, 2019 – Bridgewater, NJ):  Angelys Nina launched a game-tying two-run homer in the top of the eighth and ripped a go-ahead hit in the tenth, but the York Revolution could not complete the comeback, falling to the Somerset Patriots 3-2 in 10 innings on Saturday night in front of 6,014 fans at TD Bank Ballpark.  The Revs will look to avoid a series sweep on Sunday before kicking off a four-day, five-game homestand at PeoplesBank Park on Monday evening.

Down 2-0 in the top of the eighth, Henry Castillo greeted reliever and former Revs teammate James Pugliese with a line drive single to center.  That set up Nina who crushed a game-tying homer down the left field line, tying the game at 2-2 with late-inning heroics in just his sixth game since joining the team.  The Revs threatened to take the lead as Alexi Casilla and Melky Mesa reached on two-out singles, but Pugliese struck out cleanup hitter Telvin Nash to end the threat and keep the game tied.

Revs righty Peter Tago walked the tightrope to keep it tied in the bottom half, dealing with a pair of jam-shot bloop hits that fell with one out, along with a two-out error that kept the inning alive.  Tago kept it tied, however, retiring Mike Fransoso on a fly out to shallow left to leave the bases loaded.

Both teams went down in order in the ninth, with Revs reliever Pat Young dominating the top of the Patriots lineup, striking out the side in order.

Nina quickly put the Revs ahead with an RBI single to center in the top of the tenth inning, plating Castillo who started the inning as the runner at second.  Center fielder Mike Crouse’s throw home sailed all the way to the backstop, allowing Nina to advance to second.  Somerset righty Jake Joyce retired Justin Trapp on a fly out after a pair of fouled bunt attempts, but Nina advanced to third on a wild pitch with one out.  Joyce came back to strike out J.P. Sportman for the second out, but uncorked another wild pitch, allowing Nina to race home with the insurance run and a 4-2 lead.  Walks to Casilla and Mesa set up Nash with a chance to blow the game open, but his deep, towering drive to right-center was caught by Crouse at the edge of the warning track.

Somerset immediately pressured the Revs’ lead in the bottom of the tenth as Will Kengor singled up the middle off Revs lefty Orleny Quiroz to plate Rey Navarro.  A balk moved pinch-runner Justin Pacchioli to second as the tying run, and a walk to Craig Massey followed.  Edwin Espinal ripped an RBI single through the right side of the infield, tying the game at 4-4 with still no outs.  Quiroz was lifted in favor of righty Jameson McGrane, and after a double steal, Mike Ohlman was put on intentionally to load the bases with no outs.  McGrane fell behind Crouse 3-1 before coming back to strike him out swinging for the first out, but could not get past Fransoso who struck a game-ending single deep to the gap in left-center, giving the Patriots the walk-off victory.

York starter Corey Walter was solid in his third outing, allowing just two runs for the second straight start, doing so in 5.1 innings.

Somerset lefty David Holmberg chucked seven shutout frames, giving up just four base hits in a no-decision.  It marked the second straight night that a Patriots starter worked seven scoreless, as the Revs were mired in a 16-inning scoreless streak before Nina’s game-tying home run in the eighth.

Somerset opened the scoring in the bottom of the third as Alfredo Rodriguez bunted for a single with two outs for the Patriots’ first hit, stole second, and scored on a Navarro two-strike single to right.  Ramon Flores made it 2-0 on a seeing-eye chopper that bounded through the middle for an RBI single in the fifth.

Notes: York falls to 1-5 in extra innings, having dropped five straight, while Somerset improves to 5-0 (2-0 vs. York). The Patriots also improve to 5-0 against the Revs this season, and have won five straight overall.  Nina drove in all three runs for the Revs, accounting for his first three RBI of the season; his 3-for-4 performance was his second three-hit game of the season and first since joining York (both vs. Somerset).
