RailCats Sign LHP Jones, Del Valle Officially Retires

Sioux Falls, S.D.–The Gary SouthShore RailCats announced the signing of pitcher Jon Jones on Monday afternoon and have released pitcher Brandon Guske. The RailCats also officially placed catcher Jaime Del Valle on the inactive list due to retirement.

Jones, 27, has played five previous seasons in professional baseball in American Association as well as the Australian Baseball League, the Frontier League and the United Baseball League. His experience in the American Association includes stops in Loredo and El Paso in 2013, and in Joplin, Loredo, and Winnipeg in 2015.

His most recent professional experience was with the Gateway Grizzlies in 2016, where he appeared in 31 games, starting nine of those, and striking out 62 batters.

Guske, 22, appeared in Sunday’s game against Sioux City where he gave up one run on three hits, struck out one, and walked one in 1.1 innings.  He went 6-8 with a 3.96 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) as a senior at Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) University and was named a Pre-Season All-American.

Del Valle, 27, appeared in 107 games in three seasons at catcher and first base with the RailCats.  He recorded 14 extra-base hits and 84 total hits and His batting average was .250 or over in each of his three seasons with the ballclub. Del Valle is retiring due to being hired by the Arizona Diamondbacks as a video analyst.

The RailCats begin a seven-game road trip tonight as they face the Sioux Falls Canaries at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Charle Rosario (2-2, 3.49) faces fellow righty Grady Wood (0-1, 4.33)
