RailCats activate Fritze from disabled list, place Newell on DL

GARY, Ind. — The GarySouthShore RailCats re-activated reliever Ryan Fritze from the disabled list on Thursday and placed outfielder Cameron Newell on the disabled list with an inner ear infection retroactive to Sunday, May 28. Fritze has retired 10 of the 11 hitter’s he’s faced this season and became the first RailCats pitcher in franchise history to record two wins and a save in his first three professional baseball appearances.

Fritze earned back-to-back wins on May 22 and May 23 before recording the save on May 24 with in the 13th inning against Kansas City. The right-hander signed with Gary on May 23 after going 3-5 with a team-high seven saves in 25 relief outings as a senior at Valparaiso University in 2016. As a junior, Fritze went 3-7 with a 4.54 ERA in 14 starts for the Crusaders.

Newell is hitless in two games this season and hit .303 with 14 extra-base hits, 24 RBIs and four stolen bases last season for the RailCats. Newell began his professional baseball career in 2015 after being selected by the Miami Marlins in the 35th round of the MLB Draft out of University of California at Santa Barbara.

Gary wraps up their seven-game homestand and four-game series vs. Kansas City on Thursday at 7:10 p.m. Southpaw Alex Gunn (1-0, 2.70) squares up against Kansas City right-hander Chris Perry (0-1, 9.39) in the series finale.
