Rain certainly played a factor in a 11-0 loss for the Gary SouthShore RailCats (6-6) against the Kansas City T-Bones (5-6) at the Steelyard on Tuesday as there was initially a delay in the bottom of the fourth inning. Once the tarp was removed, heavy rain returned and a second delay occurred. The delays totaled over an hour in length. However, many of the 2,652 loyal fans who attended Tuesday’s game stayed until its conclusion. 

After both teams turned unconventional double plays in the third to keep one another from scoring, Kansas City ended the scoring drought with four two-out runs in the top of the fourth. Patrick Brady made it 1-0 with a soft RBI single into shallow center field, scoring Zach Walters from third. Christian Correa extended the T-Bones’ lead to four with a three-run inside-the-park home run to left-center field for the final runs of the frame.

The rain delays did not derail the offense as the T-Bones added with a Marcus Lemon two-run RBI single with the bases loaded scoring Kevin Keyes and Walters to make the score 6-0. Daniel Rockett then followed with a three-run home run to deep left field as Chase McDonald and Lemon went along for the ride.

A tenth run of the game was scored by the T-Bones when Marcus Lemon hit his second single of the game in the seventh inning, which scored Zach Walters.

Kevin Keyes added to the Kansas City lead when he hit his second home run of the series when he hit a solo home run to lead off the ninth.

Gary’s Jeff McKenzie (0-2, 5.09 ERA) left the game with an ankle injury in the fifth inning when Walters hit an infield single off McKenzie in the fifth. The southpaw surrendered six earned runs on seven hits, struck out three while walking two.

The RailCats offensively were led by Anthony Cheky, who muscled a single into center in the first and a double in the left-center field gap in the sixth.

Kansas City’s starter, Calvin Drummond, finishes with a no-decision as he only pitched four innings. He gave up no runs, on five hits, struck out four and walked two. Rich Mascheri (1-0, 4.91) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief while striking out a pair.

Gary continues their seven-game homestand and four-game series vs. Kansas City on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday’s pitching duel features 2016 All-Star Charle Rosario (1-1, 4.08) and Kansas City right-hander Gabe Perez (1-0, 3.48).
