Gary, Ind. – The Gary SouthShore RailCats (6-4) were able defeat the Texas AirHogs (4-6) on Sunday by a score of 5-1 to take the game and the series from Texas. The RailCats have never lost a series against the AirHogs in American Association play.

The RailCats offense came alive after Jaime Del Valle plated Anthony Cheky Jr. with an RBI single in the fourth inning to tie the game at one. Cheky got on with a walk, advanced on a wild pitch, and was able to score on a close play at the plate.

Gary SouthShore took the lead in the fifth inning when Kris Goodman doubled in Andy DeJesus, who reached base with a double of his own to lead off the fifth. Chase Harris then followed with a RBI single to extend the RailCats lead to 3-1. Frank Martinez blew the game open with a two-run RBI single scoring Harris and Cheky to make the score 5-1.

Alex Gunn (1-0, 2.70 ERA) recorded the win in a solid seven-inning, one-run effort. Gunn only gave up five hits, and struck out six in seven innings to record a quality start.

The first run of the game was scored by the AirHogs in the top of second, when Ryne Willard hit an RBI single to score Ryan Wagner. Wagner reached base on a one out double to right-center field, his second extra base hit of the series.

Texas southpaw Griffin Russell took the loss (0-2, 7.88). He gave up 3 runs, 5 hits, 2, walks, and struck out three in 4 innings pitched.

Gary continues their seven-game homestand on Monday afternoon with a four-game series vs. the Kansas City T-Bones. Tyler Harris (0-0, 0.00) opposes Kansas City right-hander and former White Sox pitcher Scott Carroll (0-1, 3.60) in the series opener. First pitch from U.S. Steel Yard is at 4:10 p.m. with gates opening at 3 p.m.
