Gary, Ind. — Gary fell to Chicago, 5-4, in front of 4,989 fans at U.S. Steel Yard in game one of Wednesday’s Fourth of July doubleheader and were suspended in game two due to unplayable field conditions with the Dogs leading the RailCats, 2-0, with two outs in the top of the second. Play from game two of Wednesday’s scheduled doubleheader will resume in Rosemont, Ill., on August 20th.

Chicago (16-28) took the early lead in game one on Trey Vavra’s two-out solo home run off the RailCats video board in left-center. The home run was Vavra’s team-high eighth of the year.

Gary (23-21) responded with three two-out runs in the second to take a 3-1 lead. Alex Crosby reached on a two-out error by Dogs first baseman Dalton Blaser before Garrett Copeland pulled a single to left. Will Savage then reached on the second Dogs fielding error of the inning, allowing Crosby to score from second. With a pair of runners in scoring position, Reggie Wilson gave the RailCats their first lead of game with a two-run single up the middle.

Randy Santiesteban increased the RailCats lead to 4-1 with a solo home run to begin the third. The homer was Santiesteban’s third of the year and Gary’s sixth home run in their last five contests.

The Dogs cut the RailCats lead to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the fifth. Vavra’s sacrifice fly to right made it 4-2 before a two-out fielding error from Savage allowed Jonathan Moroney to score from third.

Chicago took the lead for good with two more runs in the sixth. Michael Baca tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI single to center before Edwin Arroyo put the Dogs up 5-4 with a sacrifice fly to center.

Jack Fowler (0-1) was charged with his first loss after allowing two runs on four hits over two innings of relief. Tyson Perez (2-2) earned the win after retiring all six batters he faced in two innings out of the bullpen while Kaohi Downing (11) secured the win with his second save in as many nights with a perfect bottom of the seventh.

Chicago jumped in front again in game two with another two-out home run before play was suspended with two outs and nobody on base in the top of the second. Moroney led off the game with a leadoff single before Benson blasted a two-out, two-run home run to left-center, giving the Dogs an early 2-0 lead.

The RailCats are idle on Thursday before beginning a three-game road trip on Friday at 7:05 p.m. in South Dakota against the Sioux Falls Canaries. RHP Daniel Minor (7-2, 2.62) makes his league-high 12th start in the series opener for Gary while Sioux Falls has yet to announce their starter.

Gary returns home to U.S. Steel Yard for a three-game homestand beginning on Monday, July 9th for the Texas AirHogs. Monday’s game is another All You Can Night and MetroPCS Monday. Fans can purchase the AYCE hot dogs, popcorn and peanuts $10 wristbands at the box office before and during the game.
