GARY, Ind. — The Gary SouthShore RailCats re-signed right-handed relief pitcher Christian Herstine, activated left-handed pitcher Lars Liguori from the 7-Day Disabled List, traded outfielder John Price Jr. to the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League for future considerations and placed left-handed pitcher Alex Gunn on the 7-Day Disabled List before game one of Wednesday’s doubleheader vs. the Chicago Dogs.

Herstine finished without a record and a 9.00 ERA in three relief appearances with Gary in 2017 and also spent time on both the Inactive and Disabled List. Herstine signed his first Independent Professional baseball contract with the RailCats on June 21, 2016, following his senior season at Marietta College (OH). Herstine tossed two scoreless innings of relief in his pro debut on June 22, 2016, and went 1-0 with a 10 strikeouts and a 1.04 ERA in five relief appearances before having his contract purchased by the New York Yankees on July 7. In 10.2 innings pitched in 2016, Herstine allowed just one run on two hits and three walks and struck out 10 batters.

Liguori was 1-4 with a 3.80 ERA in 10 games (six starts) with Gary before being placed on the 7-Day Disabled List on June 27th. Gunn was 4-3 with a 4.64 ERA in 11 starts before being placed on the Disabled List on Wednesday. Gunn tossed his first career complete game shutout on June 2nd vs. Fargo-Moorhead.

Price Jr. batted .217 with two doubles, a triple, four runs and an RBI over 13 games (12 starts) in his first season of professional baseball with Gary. The 26-year-old signed his first professional baseball contract with the RailCats on Jan. 10, 2018, and went 1-for-4 with a run and a sacrifice fly in pro debut on May 20th vs. the St. Paul Saints. Price Jr. recorded his first pro hit in his first pro at-bat off Saints LHP Jeff Malm and forced extra-innings with a sacrifice fly off former MLB pitcher Tom Wilhelmsen in the bottom of the ninth on May 20th.

The RailCats conclude their four-game series on Wednesday against the Chicago Dogs with a doubleheader (two seven-inning games) beginning at 5 p.m. RHP Yasutomo Kubo (0-0, 0.00) will start game one and LHP Laris Liguori (1-4, 3.80) will start game two for Gary. Chicago sends LHP Tommy Thorpe (1-2, 2.73) to the mound in game one and LHP Rich Mascheri (1-0, 2.75) in game two.

Wednesday is the fifth “Office Wednesday” of the year, another NorthShore Health Centers Wednesday, and the second annual 4th of Juluau Pig Roast, presented by Berey Bros, and Barefoot Hawaiian Luau with Fire Dancers. Wednesday’s game is Independence Day and will feature a classic egg toss between games and an Independence Day Fireworks Super Show after game two of the doubleheader.
