Gary, Ind. — Eight scoreless innings from Daniel Minor and three hits from Alex Crosby guided the Gary SouthShore RailCats to a 7-0 shutout over the Chicago Dogs in front of 3,827 fans on Thursday night at U.S. Steel Yard in the series finale. Thursday’s win earned the ‘Cats a series split with the Dogs and improved Gary’s record to 6-2 against Chicago.

Minor (6-2) earned his third consecutive win and league-leading sixth of the year with his second consecutive shutout performance. The second year RailCat yielded just five hits, walked none and struck out six in his league-high 10th start. Following Thursday’s start, Minor has tossed a season-best 19 consecutive scoreless innings and is 3-0 with a 0.42 ERA in his last three starts.

Jack Fowler secured the win after retiring three of the four batters he faced in a scoreless top of the ninth. Fowler has now retired 33 of the last 42 batters he’s faced in relief, hasn’t allowed a run in eight of his last nine appearances and has allowed just one run over 12 innings in the month of June.

Gary (21-17) took a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first and second innings. Colin Willis got the ‘Cats on the board with an RBI fielder’s choice before D.K. Carey made it 2-0 with an RBI infield single. Will Savage increased the Gary lead to three with an RBI double down the left field line in the second before Andy De Jesus brought Savage around to score with a two-out RBI triple to the right-center wall.

The ‘Cats took their biggest lead of the series with three more runs in the fifth to go up 7-0. Santiesteban delivered the first run of the inning with an RBI double to left center before Andy Paz drove in the final two runs of the game with a two-run double off the top of the left-center wall.

Chicago’s (11-27) Connor Root (2-5) was charged with his third consecutive loss in his first ever appearance against Gary. The right-hander allowed a season-high seven runs (five earned) on 11 hits over 4.2 innings.

The RailCats begin another five-game road trip on Friday at 7:05 p.m. in Nebraska against the Lincoln Saltdogs. LHP Alex Gunn (4-2, 3.81) makes his league-high-tying 10th start in the series opener against Lincoln LHP Eric Wooten (0-2, 4.23). 

Gary returns home to U.S. Steel Yard on Wednesday, July 4th, for a scheduled doubleheader against the Chicago Dogs at 5 p.m. Wednesday’s game is the fifth “Office Wednesday” of the year, another NorthShore Health Centers Wednesday, and the second annual 4th of Juluau Pig Roast, presented by Berey Bros, and Barefoot Hawaiian Luau with Fire Dancers. Wednesday’s game is Independence Day and will feature a classic egg toss between games and an Independence Day Fireworks Super Show after game two of the doubleheader. Fans can also sign up for the “Office Olympics” Jersey Auction during either game on Wednesday vs. Chicago.
