Gary, Ind. — Two doubles from Andy Paz and two scoreless innings from Yasutomo Kubo in his U.S. professional baseball debut weren’t enough on the fourth “Office Wednesday” from U.S. Steel Yard as the Gary SouthShore RailCats fell to the Chicago Dogs, 4-3, with 2,596 in attendance. Wednesday’s loss brings Gary’s record to 5-2 in seven games against Chicago.

The 37-year-old former Japanese Major League Pitcher retired six of the eight batters he faced, two via strikeouts, in two scoreless frames in his first professional baseball appearance since Aug. 17, 2017. Kubo was then relieved by southpaw Jeff McKenzie in the top of the third.

Gary (21-16) jumped in front with a run in the fifth. Paz ended Scott Barnes’ streak of 12 consecutive batters retired with a leadoff double down the left field line. D.K. Carey then drew a walk before Wilfredo Gimenez reached on a fielder error from Barnes, loading the bases for Alex Crosby. Crosby followed Gimenez with a sacrifice fly to left-center, bringing home Paz from third with the first run of the game.

Chicago (10-27) quickly countered with two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 advantage. Edwin Arroyo tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single before Dalton Blaser gave the Dogs their first lead with a two-out RBI double to center. The RailCats regained the lead with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back RBI doubles from Paz and Carey.

The Dogs took the lead for good on Dalton Blaser’s two-run home run down the right field line in the top of the eighth. The home run was Blaser’s second of two extra-base hits on the night and his second long ball of the year.

McKenzie (2-3) was charged with the loss in his first relief outing of the year after allowing four runs on seven hits, a walk and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Rich Mascheri (1-0) earned his first win for the Dogs with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief while Kaohi Downing (7) secured the win with the four-out save.

The RailCats and Dogs conclude their four-game series on Thursday night at 7:10 p.m. The reigning American Association Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week Daniel Minor (5-2, 3.19) makes his league-high 10th start for Gary against Chicago RHP Connor Root in the series finale.
